Default '98 b 2500

So my parents are back from their winter home in Florida, and my dad casually says he just spent $1500 on a car. I asked what it was about, thinking maybe he had to have a repair done on the '06 Town & Country, and he says he bought a truck. Its a 1998 Mazda B2500, 152K miles with a 5 speed and a sliding rear window. Bought it from one of my brother's friends, and when he's there it'll be dad's vehicle. When he's not there my brother is going to drive it daily instead of his '08 Miata, plus he can't move anything in that car.

He said it was white, had a Ranger bed on it and the Mazda gate. Saw a picture of it, and the bed doesn't look too bad until you look closely and then you can see that its a little different shade of white, and the lines don't quite match up.

Has an Alpine stereo, so brother's happy. Also, the clutch doesn't start to engage until the pedal is almost all the way out. Guy who owned it before said he thought it was the original clutch, so its probably going to need replacing sooner than later. And the armrest console lid is broken, so brother Bill says he's looked at Rangers and Mazdas in U Pull Its and they're pretty picked over. But if he runs across one he'll likely pick it up.

Should get pretty good MPG, and being a Florida car it has zero rust. Makes me wonder why the bed was replaced, but guy that sold it said it was like that when he bought it and didn't know either.

Was it in an accident? That could be why the bed was replaced. Sounds like the guy they bought it from is shady and wasn't forthcoming with the actual facts. Oh well, as long as its good structurally and mechanically.

His name is Brandon and he's a pretty decent guy. Co-worker of my brother's at a former bar they both worked at. Mechanically it was checked out by a trusted shop, and it got a clean bill of health. Except for needing a clutch sooner than later its OK.

Plus, it was only $1500 and my dad wouldn't spend that kind of money without doing his homework.

5.0 = 305

5.4 = 329

5.43 = 331

btw i hate measuring engines in pop bottle sizes....cubic inches is much more precise

He's been hitting the junkyards looking for the arm rest lid (his is broken or missing, not sure) and he recently found a receiver hitch and installed it. He bought it for $25 and got the connector also. Doesn't have anything he wants to tow, and he said he got it because it was half price day at the U Pull It.

Tow rating is only 1500 lbs, so it better be pretty small. A small utility trailer maybe.

He also said the clutch, which he knew was going to go out soon (only engages on the very top of the pedal travel is now not releasing (after its been running a while) until the pedal is all the way out, and then it releases suddenly). He changed the fluid (said it was very dark) and hopes that will give him some more life out of the clutch.

Probably shouldn't be spending money on things like a hitch when he has nothing to tow, even though it was a really good deal. Spend that money on getting the clutch replaced.

I thought it might be the throw out bearing, but he just changed the transmission oil. Also could be the springs on the clutch are so worn out that they can't release linearly any more- only have enough spring left to get the job done at the very end.

Sounds to me like either the slave cylinder or the master cylinder for the clutch is shot. Maybe both. Gotta drop the tranny to work on the slave, so might as well take a look at the clutch while it's out and see if it's really shot or not. The slave comes with a new bearing and spring.

if its a 2wd then dropping the trans is not too hard. the cross member is the hardest part because of the rusty bolts...
