What I learned from this weekend
Went on a business trip Wednesday through today. Just got home. I was sitting and going over notes I took at all the meetings.
Apparently the recession is over. According to the one keynote speaker. He has in the last 8 weeks met face to face with CEO's of large and small companies. He asked them all one simple question. How are you doing?
He said their answer was either great or fantastic. He continued to say that he will guarantee Christmas sales to be the highest they have been in 3-4 years.
He said that people have put money aside and they are ready to spend. Talking about consumers.
There were companies from west coast to east coast. and all points in between.
I have to over the weekend come up with ideas to grow our company and get everyone else on board and "fired" up to grow the company. I sense I wont be doing what I currently do now for much longer. I think they have plans for me.
Just wanted to see what every one else has to say and if they see the same thing. Where you live.

Same with us mid February was about when they told us to prepare for overtime.
Since then we have worked a lot of Saturdays, and at least 4 Sundays

Re: What I learned from this weekend
Around here, Mt. Airy was hit eal hard because we were once a textile town. There might be 3 small factories left out of 20. I would say that town is ALWAYS full and people are spending money. Ou company is doing very well (even got a bonus check last week) especially for a product that is very expensive (Granite). I'm kept busy every day with new orders for stone after order.
I think the economy is getting better, but I don't think we are out of a recession. One major factory that would help is if some kind of legislation regarding gas prices was introduced. IMO, that is the main reason for ou economy. The gas companies have taken all of our expendible money and put it into their pockets. Just look at Exxon Mobil's profit! I do realize that a comany needs to make a profit, but setting records in this recession just shows u that thay take advantage of our dependency of oil. I think if gas prices went down to say $1.50 or less, you would see a surge n the economy because I know I sue could use the extra $25 a fillup to spend on something else.

Re: What I learned from this weekend
I know in the lift kit market things have been busy! We (sales) have been working 60+hrs a week and we still can't keep up. They said this has been our best year to date so far.

Keep in mind CEO's dont like saying that they are doing poorly. Alot of companies are "doing fine" until they shut the doors.

exactly
the electrical contracting company my mom works for is about to close their doors, because of the recession : no body is remodeling supermarkets (their main work), and so many guys moved from residential to commercial electrical work when residential crashed aswell. its really hard to compete with those guys because they have no overhead, IE : building, trucks, different insurances.

You have to think about the people who work in the oil industry in this country though. The workforce of the oil industry is HUGE. If you capped gas prices at $1.50 a gallon the oil companies would pack their shit and get out. That would put tons of people out of work and cripple the economy, not create a surge. I live smack dab in the middle of the oil field and even though I don't work in the oil field my company is almost entirely dependent on that particular industry. If you crippled the oil field in that way the city I live in would be a ghost town.
I wish every day that oil would climb back to $150 a barrel. I sure as hell don't like paying $5 for a gallon of gas, but for the extra cash in my pocket that comes with it is 100% worth it.

Re: What I learned from this weekend
Interesting thanks for the replies.
I can see that it is coming back and people are starting to spend money. However I think more thought goes into the spending now then it did say 2 years ago.
He said most CEO's wont let on that business is doing good due to their political views. I am guessing they dont wanna give Obama credit.
One thing that stuck in my mind was.
"Government does not create jobs. Businesses create jobs."

You guys never got it hard.
at 150$/barrel, we were paying 1.55-1.60$ a LITER, while you guys were complaining for paying much less. Even at 75$/barrel, oil companies are making billions in profits, and that's, quarterly.
For instance, oil is at what, 78$/barrel? we pay 1.14$/liter...W...T...F

Re: What I learned from this weekend
I work at a large Medical Center and money is tight already without any more interference. The new laws will put a huge strain on small hospitals. We are required to do more now with less money and no new hiring. Glad to have the job though. We are having to do more and to spend more to meet the new requlations but we are not making as much money. This means less profit and cost cutting in other areas.
