Anyone an a&p mechanic???
Hey y'all! Just curious to know if anyone on here happens to be an airframe and power plant (a&p) mechanic? I'm a college kid majoring in aviation and have considered switching to a technical school to get my a&p. Anyone have any info about the job at all and what you think of it, good and bad? Thanks in advance!

Re: Anyone an a&p mechanic???
Well i work for an airline and my grandpa is a retired A&P I'm also aviation management major and student pilot. From what i have seen at work and heard from my grandpa its a great job to have. Pay is good and i can tell you my grandparents did quite well. Now a days though id suggest finish the major and get the A&P most airlines like to see both almost everything internal wants a degree of some sort I'm even limited to what i can do on the ramp till i finish my 4 year but thats just my .02 cents.

My only concern looking at it as a career is that I'm not entirely sure I like the concept or having to move. I've read a lot from others about having to relocate to where the money is, and being a big family man I'm not so sure I'd like having to potentially relocate with a family one day.
Also, if I was to at least have an associates along with getting my a&p, do you think I'd have trouble finding a job? The only program in my state that would give a bachelors in science is aviation maintenance management with an obvious management emphasis. I'm definitely more hands on as opposed to being a leader type and would prefer strictly working on them.

Re: Anyone an a&p mechanic???
Yeah its all up to how far you want to go and what your goals are. Ive seen the internal job offers or Bids as we call them and there are plenty that only require an A&P but they are on the lower end of the pay scale if you want to stay strictly hands on id say specialize like engine rebuild or sheet metal to go with it those tend to help you get in the door to. And an associates can never hurt any little extra thing you have is good. They have gotten so picky lately.

I definitely like the idea of specializing. I guess you would be limited to work, but then again you would be an asset if you truly knew you're stuff.

Re: Anyone an a&p mechanic???
Well specialized doesn't mean thats the only thing you can do an A&P is an A&P so really you can do anything but the biggest part is training if you already know how to do one thing they can just throw you right out there and then train you in other areas as they come up. I know most companies look at up front cost now when they hire to so if you require less training up front you look a lot better to them. But if you do specialize sheet metal and engine overhaul are two biggies they always need more of those as well as avionics guys thats like the big three of what breaks most.

Oh ok, that makes sense. I definitely think I'd love either of the two areas, especially sheet metal. I'm going to keep looking into it and see where it goes. Thanks for the help!
