Re: Detering pests in city limits???
We use live traps. Seriously! They're great.
They work really well, for cats, skunks, raccoons, opossums, groundhogs, squirrels, etc. We've even caught a bluejay, once. Peanut butter makes excellent bait, maybe cuz it's very fragrant and a favorite of many critters. Smelly cat food may work too?
You can release the innocent victims that you're OK with. The others can be released in some distant field, far away.
We've caught many skunks and I've released them right there, in our yard, by just quietly opening the door & calmly walking away. I've NEVER been sprayed. They want to be free, not fight. Or, you can carry them elsewhere, if that suits you. Yes, some skunks here are almost totally white, and some all black.
Our 7" tall (1-door) live trap is especially good for feral cats & skunks. Our large 12" tall 1-door live trap is for bigger racoons & g'hogs. I'd recommend the 7" trap.

Of course, having a live dog may work for you. But only if he's outside when the visitor comes. Except skunks. Then it's a bad idea.
Oh, there's also a sprinkler that's activated by motion-detector, but we don't have one.
Furry critters are part of nature, and must live somewhere. Please don't kill them if there's a better way to dissuade them. Be gentle.

Re: Detering pests in city limits???
I've got a 12" havahart, is there one big enough for a bobcat though?
Fido being out when a skunk shows up can be bad, a porcupine even worse.

Re: Detering pests in city limits???
+1 on the Havahart trap. We had a major stray cat problem here in my neighborhood, cats constantly pooping/spraying everywhere and stinking up the place, until I decided to do something about it. Bought one of those traps, and learned the correct way to bait cats in. I probably have removed over 35 so far. It's much nicer here now. I do have a heart, and usually don't shoot any animals unless they are an actual threat. I did have to end my idiot neighbors German Shepard with a 22. a few years ago, since he thought it was OK to let it run free all the time, come into my yard, fight my dogs, and tear my shit up. I put a stop to that BS right quick.

Re: Detering pests in city limits???
welp, i build a trap out of junk around the house haha! something entered the cage, but the door is too finicky. imma hafta add a spring latch to keep it closed. pretty sure that's how the perpetrator got out. the chicken wire was bulged out hha! obviously there was a struggle in there lol!
unfortunately it got away, AND my lawn was torn up even worse than before -___-
sounds like a 12 pack & a pizza & a night outside is gonna be the ticket if that trap fails me again. i might end up getting one of them there fancy hav-a-heart traps lol

Get an airsoft gun it's a small plastic bb it won't hit them and its damn near silent my step dad used to do it to cats across the road one hit would shut them up at least for two days and its a good excuse to sit in you yard and get hammered with a gun (airsoft gun only) and there cheap to

What happened to the ol' exlax added to some food? Or taking the violator and a few beers for a late night drive in the country? Have you ever rigged up a cam to identify what is causing the problem?

A heads up, if you have a webcam there is free software that you can use to identify a region to be observed/recorded, and when any motion occurs in that user defined region, it records. Along with the white carpet, some people have white furniture too, making the thought of a late night, violent explosion even more gratifying. And finally, don't forget the cayenne too, something "fun" for them to lick off their feet. I've found it's fairly priced in bulk food stores.
