Re: Detering pests in city limits???
If you can't shoot the skunk with a .22 short then, if you trap them, AND if the height of the trap is such that their tail is kept down, they don't spray. Also, if you do shoot one they are known to spray so on that note you might not want to leave a dead skunk with a round in it and risk some animal rights freak from PETA finding it and flipping out.
BTW and I'm sure you probably know this, but if you shoot you'll probably get some power residue on your hands. So shoot with extreme caution.

Re: Detering pests in city limits???
i've had issues with stray cats around here for a long time, usually the cyotes show up when it gets cold and then the cats start to "dissapear", lol. if they really start pissing me off i keep my BB gun handy when i'm outside and give them more motivation that they don't want to be around my house.
a couple other suggestions i've been told but never tried are
A: more humane) plant mint everywhere. from what i was told cats hate mint.
B: not so humane...) leave a bowl of antifreeze and milk out for them. definitly not nice but will cut the critter population fairly fast...
as for the dogs crapping in your yard i used to have that problem. i saved up dog shit in a bucket for a few weeks after repeatadly telling the owner to curb their pet... once i had enough i dumped the bucket out on their front step. they got the hint

Oh humor, I forgot about that one but that's exactly what I did, in part, to the doink in my pest problem thread re the tree. The guy also takes his dogs for a walk every night to shit in his neighbors yards; he doesn't care if you catch him, he does it anyway. A poo dump of one longggg foil bread bag, totally filled, and dumped where his private sidewalk meets the public one back in summer of 2000, then reinforced by my very "direct" words and he didn't even speak, and finally I called the animal people and they came out to talk to him, and wrote him two tickets for no dog license. So far I'm the only one that stood up to Mr tough guy and his dog BS and he got the point. We get along great now, he doesn't dare pull his dog crap in my yard, I go my way, he goes his, and screws with everyone around except me. Poop dump FTW!!

Re: Detering pests in city limits???
If you shine a bright light directly in a skunks eyes, it will stare at it. Giving you enough time to shoot it in the head with a .22, if you shoot them in the head, they will not spray. Definitely wouldn't recommend trapping them.
We had a severe skunk problem at my parents house. My dad would go out every night before he went to work, with a high power led flashlight and a .22 bolt. He shot 33 skunks in the span of 2 summers, 1 was completely white as well.

How did he "dispose"; trash can or a drive somewhere?

If you accidentally catch a skunk in a live trap this is how to take care of it and not get sprayed:
Get a tarp and hold it so it's to the ground where the skunk can't see your feet all the way to above your head. Approach slowly without making noise.
When you get to the trap slowly and calmly drop the tarp over the trap and slowly and quietly as possibly tuck it down around the trap.
Get some 3-4 inch plastic flexible tube. Calmly Tuck one end under the tarp and run the other the your truck tail pipe. Take a rag or something to fill the gap between the tube and your exhaust pipe.
Start your truck and let it idle for a long time. Mr skunk will fall right asleep. A very deep sleep. Ok. Death.
Problem solved.

If you have a 22lr check out CCI Quiet, or Aguila SSS Sniper subsonic.
Literally the quietest ammo ive ever used. Sounds just like a bb gun.
Search YouTube for examples.

However it can be annoying in a semi auto because it doesn't have enough power to blow the bolt back all the way.

Re: Detering pests in city limits???
^^^ Never heard of it, but it sounds like something to buy before "his majesty" and cronies outlaw it. If it's even on the shelf for sale.
