Default Re: RWD in snow

In my old 2wd Ranger I used to put 200# of sand in the bed and if it was real bad out and I knew I wouldn't be going over 30mph (why bother going faster in a foot of snow) I would put my truck in 2nd gear (P R N D 2 1) so if I lost traction the RPM's would stay low, also it helped slowing down quicker too, just make sure you don't go over 30...don't need ya blowin up your tranny now do we.

I did this and never got stuck, just be easy with the throttle and allow for extra time to destinations, biggest thing is momentum.

If you do get stuck always straighten your wheels out forward so the truck can slice through the snow, if your wheels are turned it's obstructing the Rear Wheels from pushing forward, especially in thicker, deep snow.

I put 420# in the back of mine right up against the tailgate when the only snow of the season so far came through. Put the wide tires down firm and I could drive at highway speeds in a couple inches no problem. Floated the front tires pretty bad and it was pretty noticeable at 75 when dry. I took it all out since we haven't had snow in 2 months.

Yeah, it's all about the right tires and some weight in the rear, I've never had a problem with my truck even in deep snow with good A/T tires and weight in the rear. Although my truck might be somewhat heavier than yours, you just have to accelerate real easy off the line. Try studded snow tires, they will work great...

Don't worry about the gas mileage, I'm sure it won't be effected too much, its better to have that weight and reduce your chances of getting stuck in a snow storm...
