Body Work advice needed
Hey guys,
My 98 has a few rust spots and road paint on it that I'm trying to get with Bondo Glass product. I also bought self etching primer
A guy at National Coating and Supplies quoted me for color matched paint, hardener, 2 in 1 primer, some backing material, and a reducer that came out to about $94
Does this sound right? The guy made it sound like self etching primer was useless and the hardener in Bondo isn't any good. I can always get cheaper primer from Wally World.
Anyone that has experience with body work, your advice would be appreciated. I live in NE Ohio and don't want these rust spots to get worse.

Cut out rust weld in new ONLY way to fix it
Bondo is NOT meant to fill holes, only minor surface imperfections

x2...but if you're dead set on filling the holes with Bondo, you'll need something for the Bondo to grab on to. Most people fill the holes with big gap filler first. It's ghetto Asf and may rust it out even worse next time around but that's how people do it

My brother does all the welding. What type of metal would I need for that? I'm not very mechanically inclined.
And about surface imperfections...the one photo I took? That isn't a hole, just where paint chipped and the spot rusted.
Either way. I need to slow the rusting or stop it. Winter is gonna be hard on the truck again.
Oh, and the road paint. Sand grind and paint?

just regular sheet metal. You will have to gut the interior where you will be welding though. You don't want anything to catch fire

This^^^.
I used 18 gauge sheet metal for my floors and door sills. Worked out well. I believe they make a pre-formed cab corner patch panel for your truck that take care of most of that rust. Might make fab work a little easier.

Interesting. Wonder where I might find that pre-formed patch?
Considering taking the Bondo back, unless I need it for something?
Seems like welding would be less expensive than all this Bondo work.

you will need a little bit of bondo to finish everything off. Not much but a little bit

I saw them available through various internet retailers
You'll need some bondo to blend the new metal in with the existing material.
It's not so much the expense, it's that welding in a patch panel is the correct way to fix it. Smearing bondo over the hole doesn't fix the problem. Lol

Right. I found a page that actually sells the whole panel:
http://www.fixmyrust.com/Category/1993-2011_Ranger
Not sure if that's the route I'd want to go or just getting the right sheet metal.
