Does anyone know where to buy a brand new fully rebuilt 4.0 sohc for the 02 Ranger XLT? Either that, or any simple swaps with a motor that has better mileage and timing components? Or, where can I get a good junk motor for rebuild?

Not sure about full rebuilds, but you'll find a ton of used 4.0L sohc engines over at car-part.com. You can search local yards throughout the country by region and distance. I've found a ton of stuff through them including engines, transmissions and transfer cases.

If you love the truck but want better mileage you're probably better off trading the 4.0 for a 2.5 or 3.0L, but you'll likely be quite disappointed with the lack of performance. Otherwise you'll be looking at retrofitting something else which will be a lot of work for relatively minimal gains. The early 4.0 SOHC's are the ones with the big timing issues - later are fine, especially if maintained, and there are still tons of them around.

Good luck!
