Default Emerson Action Cam

For quite a while I have been wanting a GoPro but couldn't bring myself to spend at least $200 on something I wouldn't use very often. Recently I found out about the Emerson Action Cam.

$85 on amazon sounds better than the GoPro price....but I paid even less than that. It turns out Big Lots sells the Action Cam for $39.99.

"Heck I have an extra forty bucks, why not," I said. The camera itself feels cheap. The LCD is nice, the buttons are easy to use, and comes with a handlebar and helmet mount. Now I heard these were coming with an 8GB micro SD card from Emerson but mine didn't. Oh well, I have an extra 4GB at home, no biggie. The video below was filmed in 720p, which on a 4GB card only provides about 20 minutes of video (about 40 in the other option, can't remember what it was). I have since purchased a 32GB, which is the maximum accepted.

I used a cheap eBay suction cup mount stuck to the top of my rear window. Apparently this was not the best location since the rear view mirror blocks the forward view. I would have mounted it lower but I was afraid of showing too much dashboard. Since the case is waterproof it is sealed all the way around and this does affect the microphone. That vibration sounding noise is my flowmaster and does not do it justice.

In short, I bought a cheap GoPro like camera and was curious about the quality. For what I need it for (which is really nothing) it seems like it will work pretty well.

I also bought one of these and took it out when we got a foot of snow, the problem I had though my truck bounced the camera around the whole time and it made the video too hard to watch.still love the camera and won't complain on the price.

I havn't been to a Big Lots in a long time and was really surprised when I found out they had this camera so cheap. For the money the video quality seems pretty good. It is no GoPro but heck, $40!

This is the mount I used btw...

my thoughts 1/4 the price if not more and looks like pretty decent quality

The case seems pretty well built as do the mounts. As for the camera itself, it feels very light and the plastic feels pretty cheap. Like you said it is 1/4 the price of the GoPro and I think is worth checking out. The main reason I picked this up is that I am a beginner dirt bike rider. Beginner as in there is a 100% chance of me crashing and would hate to break a $200 camera. It seems decent and I am curious how well the battery/camera itself lasts over time.

The original video was around 20 minutes long. I snipped this section using Windows Movie Maker and published it in 720p. In a side by side comparison with the original .avi from the action cam, quality is exactly the same. So no it is not a direct upload but the quality shown is what you can expect from a direct upload.

Ok. I was just wondering if the black box around the video came from the original or not. It was definitely Movie Maker that did that. It has to do with a setting for the aspect ratio.

Just to elaborate: In WMM if you have a widescreen video file but the aspect ratio is set to standard, it renders the video with black bars at the top and bottom. Then when you upload it to YouTube, the video box is widescreen and you just uploaded a 4:3 video so it adds black sidebars. Thus, a black box is made that surrounds the video.
