Puter friend, (Mr. Cisco Anonymous) Says 7 is going to actually be one hell of a system.
XP is good enough if you are happy with it. Vista is better glitchy in the lower levels as all Microsuck products are, but quicker response times and a little more user friendly to new users. FOr old fogeys like me it is a little hard unplugging XP. It seems everything was alot easier to find in XP, it's all still here just buried. When my puter
(Alienware M17X Area 51) is not afflicted by a bios issue Vista boots in about 20 seconds.
Unfortuneatley my $4k+ laptop will attempt to boot everything plugged into a USB even with USB removed from the boot order. . . . .
But only get 7 if your computer can handle it. Vista actually requires 4GB Ram to run properly with at least 2.8 single or 2.0 double or quad.

Vista doesn't require 4GB of RAM, even for premium.

I said a "friend" that works in and out of computers all day long and heads up Cisco operations at Beech, explained to me when I picked up my new laptop. It has something to do with the operating memory load. . . . . ? (anyone who has ever had Norton knows what the effects of this are) I do not speak geek, wish I did, but, I do understand computers. This is my second Area 51 Of my last 4 "laptops", I've spent around $15k. So I tend to get my ducks in a row.
Back to the question at hand. I would not necessarily say that you would need to upgrade to 7, allthough it's not a bad thing. I can check with my friend and see if he has heard of any fixes for the IE issue. I have not kept up on it as I don't have that issue, just my girl. Or you could judt upgrade to Ultimate Black, prettysure that is what I have NTL I'll try and talk to him about it.

I started running Windows 7 when it was released as beta, (don't remember the version), on a dual boot with XP on my desktop.
I ran XP from it's release to present, have a copy of Vista Ultimate, (I built a new computer to run it) which was waste of money for the operating system. Quad core processor, 4 gig DDR2, terabyte hard drive and options, it was quick with Vista, but the OS was too glitch ridden to make for trouble free running.
Window 7 is run on the same system, it is twice as responsive as Vista, has very few glitches, (less than XP, had) and is much less intrusive than either. However, for those who are interested in running it, you should get Windows7 PlusPatch, it is an upgraded Tweak UI, and really makes a difference. I recommend to those interested in Win7, that you go to Windows7News and read, read ,and read, before you spend the money.
I run it as my main OS, and only use XP when an app or prog won't run in 7.
At the present time i don't know of any firewall that works flawlessly with it, but the programmers from the major AV/firewall companies say they will have one upon it's public release.
Also, I am having a problem with an audio driver on my old Gateway laptop and Win7. Other than that issue, and the fact that it is 7 gig when loaded, it runs very well with 2 gig of memory, (it ran good with 1 gig on the same machine) and responds better than XP on that machine also.
But, if you haven't played with Win7, and are happy with XP or Vista, stay with what you are running until you have either have a chance to try 7 on another machine, or MS stops supporting whatever OS you are running, (regrettably, it sounds like Vistas days may be numbered, with the release of 7 and all the problems people have had with Vista).

I also am running windows 7 as beta right now. I love it. Its only good until june of 2010 and I dont know if I'm gonna want to shell out the money for windows 7 next year. I lke it more than vista, and xp...way faster and had no problems at all except some programs not being able to work with it. I'm kinda pissed right now cause I got a virus that uninstalled my antivirus and firefox wont work so I'm forced to use safari. I don't know what I'm gonna do if i dont get this straightened out with this damn virus. but all in all windows 7 is kickass.

thank you for all your comments and ideas so far. my knowledge of computers would compare to trying to teach your dog how to build his own doghouse so you could sit and drink beer and watch.

Now that you have Firefox install WOT as a add-on. It is web of trust, it will tell you if a site you are going to has issues for bad things. ie: adding spyware, phishing, sending junk mail after visiting. It will have a circle in the taskbar at the top of Firefox that is green for an OK site, yellow for a site with some problems and will put a screen in front of bad site (red) to give you time to NOT fully go to the site! This will save you much problems.

Agreed. I also like Flagfox, which gives the flag of the server country on address bar. It is amazing where some of these servers really are.
BetterPrivacy and Targeted Cookie Advertising Opt-Out (TACO) are a couple other add ons that keep the internet bad guys at bay.
By clicking on the WOT icon, it will give a score card. Clicking on the flag in the address bar will send you to Geotool and give information about where the server is an other stuff, the following is what it says about this site:
Hostname www.fordrangerforum.com ISP Unknown
Country United States Country Code US (USA)
City Chicago Region Illinois
IP Address 96.30.4.161 Postal Code 60604
Flag US Latitude 41.8776
