New laptop suggestions
Well my trusty old HP laptop that I've been limping along for the last few months finally bit the big one. The motherboard is toast so istead of sinking money into this outdated computer to have it fixed I'm in the market for a new one. I've had decent luck with HP, I hated my dell with a passion so ill probably avoid them. I've looked at acer and a few other brands but don't know enough to know if they are good or not, that's where you guys come in. My budget is $300-$400 because money is tight right now, so what are your suggestions for laptops in that price range? (Don't bother saying Mac, I don't have $2000 to spend on a computer)

Re: New laptop suggestions
My netbook is an gateway(which is a rebranded Acer) and i love it. Paid 320 for it, and it does anything i need it to do.
Any of these 5 would be your best bet in my opinion.

Re: New laptop suggestions
I would checkout http://www.slickdeals.net or http://www.fatwallet.com and try to find a laptop deal that is within your budget and where people are rallying behind it as a good deal.

Re: New laptop suggestions
Stacey and I both bought our Dell laptops in 2003. Mine is still going strong today. I put windows 7 on it so its slower than our desktop. But never really any problems other than the occasional wipe after looking at porn (wipe as in re-install of windows) hehehe. Staceys Dell was a bargain buy from the begining and well, can barely handle windows XP. Our current desktop is a Dell and its great. My dad has gone thru 3 HP's and 1 dell and is currently back to a Dell. My friend has an HP that he has had a few problems with. I think as long as you stick with a major brand and get some type of warranty, you should be fine.
also, a big seller for my laptops was a no glare screen. I dont think you can get a no glare these days tho

Re: New laptop suggestions
I've heard the HP Pavillions are really nice. I personally have a MacBook Pro (graduation present.) But before this thing I had an HP and liked it pretty well.

Re: New laptop suggestions
What are you looking to do with it?
Does screen size matter to you?
Are you a gamer, if so what kind of games?

Thanks for the suggestions so far, ill check those links when I get to work tomorrw. I mainly just use my laptops for web surfing, storing music and pictures ect so I don't need a super powerful gaming setup or anything. Things I want are at least 3 gigs ram, 200 gig HD minimum, 64 bit operating system and decent battery life. Just from the little bit of looking I did today it looks like you can get a whole lot of computer for you money these days so I just need to find one that people have had good luck with.

Re: New laptop suggestions
I think that a 64 bit is not compatible with alot of software. I think that is what I have heard.

My work computer is 64 bit and I haven't had any issues, in fact I've had fewer software issues with the 64 bit over the 32 bit desktops we had before.

Re: New laptop suggestions
I work on them everyday and IMO i would stay as far away from acers, gateway and emacines(all 3 are the same company) and i would run even faster away from HPs i have piles of dead ones at work. they use very cheap parts and break very easy. i would go for a dell (i would look in to the latitudes) Toshiba arent as bad any more and Lenovo make pretty good laptop.i wouldn't get a sony they are good machines but they are expensive to fix. the dells are the best balance between good long last machines and if they do break they arent that expensive to fix. and there is alway the best route get a mac. lol

I wouldn't be totally opposed to another dell but my last one I bought I had it custom built for me straight from dell and payed almost $1000 for it and within a year it became almost unusable, dvd drive crapped out, multimedia port is inop and most of time it won't recognize any usb device that I plug into it. I still have it, in fact its sitting on my lap right now, I'm trying to get the wireless network adaptor working. Lol. Really the only thing I can do with it is turn it on and turn it off. Ha ha.

yea i havent seen any 64 bit problems since the x64 xp days, i sell a dozen or so computers a day with 64-bit OS every day and have never had some one complain about a compatibility problem. I would make sure that if you go with a pc laptop to get one with 64-bit 7. because most software is made to work best with it anymore, like office is a big one runs so much better on a 64-bit os compared to a 32-bit os
