If you ordered it why do you still have the trial edition? Waiting for the CD to come in the mail?

Hrmm, I think I'm going to go ahead and give Windows 7 a run. I just recently re-installed Windows XP and it dawned on me that I'm installing an operating system over 8 years old which is a llloonnnggg time in the computer world. I guess it's time I get with the times... plus the fact that I can get it for $30 makes it appealing.

I haven't used it yet, but I honestly have not heard anything negative about it, and I've been paying close attention. I'm a member of a netbook forum, and people say it runs great on the very limited resources of a netbook.

9 times out of 10 I would agree with with you there, but Windows 7 has been used by the masses for a good 10 months or so while it was in Beta so I seriously doubt we are going to say any significant amount of bugs (beyond your typical MS stuff).

yeah, but I can't convince her of that. I guess it's gonna take Vista crashing again and her losing all her data to change her mind.......

That should take another 3 weeks or so.

Well yesterday I pulled the trigger and forked over the $30 for Windows 7 and I already have it up and running, by far one of the quickest Windows installs I've ever done. This definitely has a different feel than Windows XP did so things are a little slow right now but I'm already liking a lot of the features, such as the new taskbar.

never had it, never will.

waaaaaaaay back in the Windows XP (SP1) days, I switched over to Linux... been running it ever since. My old WinXP machine died about 6 months ago, and I haven't missed it a bit!

...and, Linux is free! ...and the software that runs under it is free!

but its more business is it not? or is it just as good as a home computer set up?

heck no! it works fine on a home computer!

if you play a lot of computer games (I don't) there may be issues with some games for a bit before they'll work under Wine (a windows emulator that allows windows programs to run on linux - yes, it's free, too), but judging by the list of "known working" stuff, it looks like most are ready to go, right out of the package.

anyway, a lot of the various linux distributions (or "distros", as they're called) have a "Live CD" available -- made so that you can put the CD in your CD-ROM drive and boot from it, running Linux on your current Windows computer, without overwriting or affecting your windows installation at all. This gives you an opportunity to check it out on your hardware, to see how things look/feel without having to commit to completely installing a whole new operating system.

re: games -- i have a playstation if I want to play games, so I haven't bought a computer game since sometime back in the late 80s or early 90s!! (and, truth be told, I'd much rather spend my time [and quarters, if I must] on a real, live, multi-ball pinball game -- far more entertaining, and requiring far more skill!!)

in case someone asks (and they usually do): I run the Fedora distribution on most of my machines.
