Default Pay Pal fees

Just a quick question about the fees for Pay Pal. Who should pay the fee for a transaction? Buyer Seller Neither.

Lets say John from FRF sell "X" to Frank from FRF. Should the seller eat the cost of money deal...? The buyer...? Split, 50/50...? Or simply gift the money.

I usually go ahead and eat the cost as just a common courtesy I suppose. I would do it as "gift" but I undrestand that paypal needs the fee to keep things running smoothly so I dont mind paying it.

I think the buy should pay the fees as the seller is already buying something in the first place

When there are paypal fees it is ALWAYS paid by the seller, there is no way around that, it's hardcoded into paypal. All a seller could do is ask the buyer to pay extra to reimburse for the fees.

IMHO, it's tacky to state a price and then ask for more money to cover the merchant fee. There is no fluctuation in the paypal fees, just factor it into to your price.

You don't see businesses trying to charge a separate fee to cover their merchant expenses.

I usually eat the PP fees when I sell something.

If it's a small amount like $5.00 or less, sometimes I'll ask if the buyer wouldn't mind sending it as a gift so I don't have to pay $0.50 in fees on that small amount. Same for some more expensive items, but I know most people don't like sending larger amounts as a gift unless they really, REALLY trust the seller.

If I remember correctly, you can send a gift funded from your PP balance & not have to pay any fees, but if you fund the same gift from a credit card, you'll have to pay the fees... at least that's what has happened to me a few times.

Sometimes, I'll send a regular payment for something I've bought & add a little extra to help the seller cover the fees on their end.

From my understanding, if you have your bank account linked and pay from that, there are no fees. But if you use a debit card or credit then you do. This makes no since to me since a debit card is linked to your bank account

I always used a fee calculator to make sure I was getting what I wanted.

Here is one that is out there. http://www.rolbe.com/paypal.htm

If you gift the money there is no protection if something goes wrong.

True, I would only suggest the gift deal when dealing with someone you really trust to take care of you if something goes wrong.

i gifted you the money for the switches.... you better not screw me!!!!!! haha i trust you. besides, $20 won't exactly ruin my life.

i've been doing a lot of transactions with paypal recently, and just eat the cost myself when people send me money. it adds up over time which kind of sucks, but at the same time i'm making money already.

something along this line, a lot of business's get charged a fee for using debit and/or credit cards. they don't charge the customer extra for using the card.

but if you sell something on ebay, not only do you have the PP fees, you also have the ebay fees. kinda sucks for the seller.

That's why I always use my debit card when buying gas. They all around here get charged 5 cents per transaction. My little way of sticking it back to the gas company.

My sister works at a gas station and they at one point declined all transactions with debit/credit cards if under 50 dollars.

how would that work? you swipe the card, then pump. what would happen if you pumped less than $50? they require you to come in and pay cash?

I dunno it how it worked. At that time gas was 3.50+ so 50 dollars was easy to get to.
