Default Is Rock dead?

That's a loaded question. I feel new music today, for the most part, isn't rock. What I grew up on is now categorized as "classic rock". Which leads one to believe that there is current or modern rock. There are sub-categories of rock: Southern, Pop, early Heavy Metal (they're in their own class now), progressive, ,soft, contemporary, etc.

However, I think that "basic" rock is dead...Except for the bands who are still alive and can still tour. One such band - AC/DC toured late last year and earlier this year. I managed to get 2nd row for it. Talk about time travel back to the past! This was one of the top 3 concerts I have ever seen, despite their age and mine. Brian Johnson's voice isn't what it was, but he's adapted and he puts in 100%. Angus hasn't slowed a bit on guitar. That man is wild! Here are some pics from the concert in D.C.

I would say that rock, including all it's sub-genres, is very much alive. It's definitely not as mainstream as it once was, and I personally think that most of the music classified as rock that you hear on the radio these days is junk. I'm not a big fan of radio, period. The last few years, I have listened almost exclusively to independent music, and it's opened up a whole new world for me. It seems like most people think that if a band is not famous and not on the radio, they're no good. I feel the exact opposite. All modern music that's on the radio, regardless of genre, is pop music. And to me, pop music is made by those who want fame and big paychecks, which is all the wrong reasons for making music, in my opinion. I'm a music lover, and I think music should be made for the love of making music. Some of the best bands I have ever heard are bands nobody has heard of, and that's just the way I like it.

So my answer to your question is both yes and no. Yes because mainstream rock is toast, and no because there are still tons of bands making it.

Some good opinions/reasons here. I know a lot of people don't like big or mainstream rock. But for me, it's just as valid as all the other music I do listen to.

I got my first AM radio in 1970, when I was 5. I cut my teeth on Casey Kasem's Top 40 every Sunday, on the drive home from church. A lot of it was bubble-gum or formula pop, but still, when I hear songs like These Eyes by The Guess Who, 40 years later, it still sounds impressive. Many songs like that, were original, creative and slick.

In high school, Southern Rock ruled, along with Zep. However, being born about 10 years too late, I missed seeing many of the classic bands that I loved.

Now that I'm older, I prefer smaller venues, unless I'm near the front row, as in the case of AC/DC. I fortunately got to see The Outlaws in '05 and '07 front row, in a very small venue. Hughie has since died, so I feel so lucky to have had those opportunities. Man, could he play! And loud!

I was born in '78 so I grew up in the 80's but I wasn't that into the rock of that era. My brother is 7 years older than me and I listened to a lot of what he listened to. So while everyone else my age was into the hair bands of the 80's I was jamming Zeppelin, Rush and quite a few others.
There rare times I do listen to FM radio, it's usually either jazz or the classic rock stations. Zeppelin, Steve Miller, Guess Who, Creedence, Seger, Stones, Beatles, Chicago...the list is endless for the older bands I love. Being from Detroit, I love the Motown sound and pretty much everybody who came out of Detroit. Detroiters have made some of the best music of all time.

to me, rock is till alive but it is dying for sure
however, dispite my age, when i think of rock, i think of classic rock as the basis of rock and rock music at its best
the quality now just cant compare with pinkfloyd, led zeppelin, ac dc, jimi hendrix, black sabbath, etc.

well I hope it is not because i am one of the unfortunate people who never really got to see any great rock bands because i am one of the youth. It frightens me because what i hear of my generation now makes absolutely no sense. I know of some good modern rock bands. my favorite modern one is three doors down because it sounds almost like rock used to. but my favorite will always be what they now classify as classic rock.

Nothing is dead... everything has evolved. Everyone still looks up to the same band but the music has changed. Each genre is like that... look at rap, pop, country, etc. from 10 years and 20 years ago vs. today.
