Home Theater Sound Options, 3.5/RCA v. Optical
Alrighty, so I got a new TV and had almost everything set-up when I go to plug in the surround sound. Only problem is there are no RCA plugs. So the only option I thought I had was the 3.5 audio out that I saw. So I went out and bought a 3.5 to RCA adapter. My only issue with this is, I am going from a 3.5 jack to a 5.1 system. I just do not feel that I am getting the true surround sound from this. Then I noticed the other jack afterwards right below called an optical. I also have this option on my reciever. I have found some info but nothing concrete. So thought I would ask here if anyone else uses the optical audio port and what they think? Does it retain the surround sound to it? Meaning, I am watching a movie and there is a car coming from the right and I hear it coming from the right, not all around me.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Home Theater Sound Options, 3.5/RCA v. Optical
My parents surround sound system uses an optical cable. I can't really compare it to anything since it's only been used with an optical cable, but it works just like a surround sound system should work. If a car is coming from the right you hear it from the right.
Also don't forget that not everything on TV supports surround sound,.

Your 3.5 to rca can only give you 2 channels. Your sound system can get sound to all five boxes, but it'll still be a 2ch source.
I don't know which tv set you got, but my bravia2 gives out a dolby digital 5.1 signal from optical.

Re: Home Theater Sound Options, 3.5/RCA v. Optical
awesome guys. exactly what I was looking for. I was pretty sure I was only getting 2 channels on the rca but was not 100% sure. Guess I will spend a few bucks on an optical. my tv better damn well support 5.1...ill check real quick.
----------
hmm...nothing about the sound support...but i would assume it does. only a few bucks for the cable on amazon...so guess ill get it.

the tv most likely does but the programs might not depending on what kind of signal your getting. i get basic old cable from back when the dinosaurs were around so most of my stuff doesnt support it but if you have the new satellite or comcast digital or cox high def stuff or whatever then u should be good

You could always post the exact model here. Not all units have an integrated dolby digital decoder. When i bought my tv, it was one of the rare, haven't looked at the more recent ones.

Re: Home Theater Sound Options, 3.5/RCA v. Optical
Awesome! Now I am stoked for that cable to get here and then get some free time for some black ops...
Thanks! Been wanting a large and in charge TV for awhile...can't beat 3 year no interest to pay it off either.
