Pure speculation. The June Apple WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) is expected to announce the 4th generation of the iPhone to be used on AT&T's network.
IF Apple goes with a second U.S. cell carrier, it won't be announced until late summer or early fall. Foxconn has supposedly been contracted to make the CMDA version of the iPhone (which is strange since ASUStek presently manufactures the GSM iPhone).
If Verizon gets the iPhone, I will be switching. That is the only reason I have AT&T now.
AT&T's 3G is faster than Verizon's, however Verizon does have more 3G coverage. I have tested my iPhone against a Blackberry as far as tethering to see which 3G was faster. The iPhone on AT&T was almost double what the Blackberry was (same PC, same location, one right after the other).
AT&T's 94% of all American coverage also includes their land lines. The commercial that says that isn't specific about which service they are talking about. I think even the small print at the bottom says that it includes the land line service.
I presently have the best of both worlds. I have an iPhone (personal) and a cheepo Verizon (work). There are a lot of times when one works and the other doesn't. My Verizon is bad about not working in basements where my AT&T does.
The unlimited change is ONLY for new customers and those who want to switch. If you presently have the Unlimited Data Plan, you can keep it; even if you upgrade to a new smart phone.
The tethering option hasn't been an issue for me since my iPhone 3GS is jailbroke (and has been since it was brand new). I have been using the MiWi app since I first jailbroke the phone. It allows me to tether my iPhone to a PC and it allows me to use the iPhone as a WiFi hot spot. Yes you read that right, I can use my iPhone as a WiFi hot spot. I can put as many laptops as I want on it. I can even take calls on it while someone is using it as a hot spot.
