Default Computer: Build or Buy?

Well I am looking at a new computer build, but I keep seeing really good deals for comps. What does everyone feel is the better way to go? Build and pay more or just buy a complete set up at best buy or something??

Depends on what you want from the computer if it will be a deal to do one way versus the other.
So, what do you want from the computer?

x2 on what you want.

if you want to do basic crap, buy a cheapy desktop, but if your into hard core gaming and media processing, you can build a sick one for cheaper than a gaming computer will run you

I will be doing some gaming, but not much, have assassin's creed II just sitting around waiting for a new comp. Some vid editing when I get bored. Other than that not much.

I've always wanted to build my own PC just to do it but I've always been sucked in by the computer deals posted on slickdeals.net.

The good thing about building one is you can make it future proof. I've looked at upgrading the graphics card on my Dell PC, but to do so would require other upgrades as well.

If I were to do it again I would checkout sites like slickdeals.net and wait for a great deal to popup on whatever particular piece (CPU, case, etc.) and just piece it together like that. You'll definitely get more bang for your buck that way, but obviously it will take some time to acquire everything.

BTW, you should checkout this thread on slickdeals, gives you a good idea of what you're getting into so you can plan accordingly: http://slickdeals.net/forums/showthread.php?t=553826

From what I found last time I was in the market, they build them so much better now, that you can have a really good computer out of the box and improve things dramatically just by upgrading the video card.

You'd have to be a real hardcore to want a totally custom-built computer.

Agreed. A bit over a year ago I was in the market for a new comp. I thought about building, and buying a pre built. I found a great deal at Best Buy. I got an HP for about 700 out the door. Here are the specs.

AMD Phenom 9550 quad core @ 2.6 ghz

6GB of 800 mhz ram

ATI Radeon HD 3200 (weak point of the setup)

700GB HDD (upgraded to 1.5TB)

Came with Vista, now running Win7 Pro Ultimate

21 inch HDMI HP monitor

Oh yea, came with a free 3 in one printer, but I sold it.

Not a bad deal if you ask me. If I used it for gaming, I would upgrade the video card, but I prefer console gaming.

www.tigerdirect.com

the prices on 6 cores phenom 2 barebones are pretty much the same as local shops charge for low end quads...
