Foreign coins
Do Canadians have as much problem getting American quarters as Americans have getting Canadian quarters? What do you do with them?
I'm not talking about going to McDonald's and getting one Canadian quarter or dime back. I'm talking about getting a roll of quarters directly from the bank to do laundry in my apartment and finding at least one Canadian quarter per roll. It is extremely annoying to me because I'm then stuck with them, and the bank no longer will accept them. Why am I out-of-luck, and what am I supposed to do besides going to a store and using them -- especially since I have over $10 in foreign currency now?

Re: Foreign coins
No canuk coins in Arizona! If you get them from the bank, I think they're ripping you off. Not that the Canadian dollar is worth any less than the USD, but if they wont convert it after they give it to you. Are the coins the same size?

Yes, and that is the problem. Individuals can't turn them in to The Fed anymore, and they are basically worthless since we can't use them in pop machines or anything (the weight is different and machines can recognize that). I try to use them at McDonald's or the gas station, etc., but then that creates the problem again. The coins get turned in to the bank usually in rolls, and someone like me walks in to get change only to find out later that there are "illegal coins". I must have over $3.00 in quarters alone that are just taking up space that I don't know what to do with. Most of my transactions are debit/credit.

i actually collect special edition coins. you know the ones with different pictures and crap on em. most of them are american. have over $80 worth of coins and they are all completely different from eachother. no duplicates. id say 70% of them are american.

Re: Foreign coins
Never thought about if Canadians had the same problem getting our quarters lol. I guess it makes since cause they are so similar in size. When I use to have an apartment, I would have to get rolls of change too, I remember one night I was trying to hurry up and start the damn laundry cause I wanted to get back to watch a game... i must have been cussing at the washer for 10 mins until I looked at my change and one was Canadian haha. Seems unfair for banks not to exchange, cause those who do usually charge a fee to do it.

I'm a property manager for an apartment complex and we have a few laundry rooms that are all coin op. 6 machines are speedqueen brand about 8 years old, 3 are speedqueen 6 months old and 3 are whirlpool about 4 years old and Canadian coins work in all of them.
PS I'm in the states.

Still have this problem. Coinmach machines are what our complex uses. I also found a new problem coin - Jamaica. Very similar in size to US and Canadian quarters.

Re: Foreign coins
In Ontario, it has never been a problem. For decades, US coins have been accepted pretty much everywhere in Ontario as 100% equivalent to Cdn coins, both in person and vending machines. I cannot recall any Cdn ever refusing our US coins. OTOH, many Americans do refuse Cdn coins, which I think is just rude.

Historically it has been worth less. Don't know right now though. I'm betting someone is rolling coins to take to the bank and the bank passes them back. The person rolling the quarters is sticking the Canadian ones in there to get rid of them.
I scored when someone gave me a 50 peso coin which is close to the size of a quarter, but thicker - it's worth about $3.75 according to the conversion.

Re: Foreign coins
Coins? A lot of folks up here don't even carry bills anymore - use debit cards for everything. Even a $1.20 coffee!
They phased out the penny recently. Cash purchases are rounded up or down to the nearest 5 cents.
When are you guys down south gonna switch to $1 and $2 coins?

That is the problem. If I went to Wal-Mart, Target, McDonald's, etc., and tried passing them, then, I'd be contributing to the problem. Next time I get a roll of quarters, I may get one back. Where does it end? If I shop, then, I use credit or debit, and rarely cash. I think for the first time in a while, Canadian money is worth more than US money. I spent my honeymoon in 07' in Ontario, and the exchange was even. I even turned some money in at a bank in Canada when I left, and normally that isn't done for non account holders and if there were a noticeable difference in exchange.

So much for debit or credit everything and then reintroduce more coins to the system. I can see phasing out the penny, but I don't see the US having regular $1 or $2 coins in everyday circulation.
I'm surprised that US coins don't present the same problem in Canada's machines as Canadian currency here does. It means that technology exists to allow the use of the coins.
