Both transmissions are 5-speed and get similar gas mileage. The manual might need minor repair down the road but will be less expensive to fix and should last a lot longer than the auto. Ford lists the towing capacity of the manual as only half the weight of the auto. You can tow just as much with the stick, but you better know what you're doing.

I had the same dilemma, but in the end went with the auto for wheeling and not wanting to deal with one more thing in the snow.

I like my auto trans. Maintain it and go easy on it, and you'll be fine.

They have this debate over on Jeep boards all the time. What it really comes down to is personal preference. If you don't mind shifting the manual is nice but, I like the auto in my TJ on the trails. Both have there pros and cons.

The auto is better for offroading, IMO.
