Yeah I keep having moments of "wow it's really neat that I landed on my side but am totally unscathed"... Then followed by hours of "oh, my poor ranger... I'm going to have such a hard time finding all those features I want...."

Still a bit humored by the tow truck guy being like "woah dude how did you do that" when he saw how the front was bent and banged but the back was clean.

I don't mean to do another abrupt about-face but I have a question for those among you who are great fog light minds....

I'm looking at these hella lights, and can someone tell me the difference between these two light kits?

http://www.amazon.com/HELLA-005700891-Series-Halogen-Driving/dp/B0002M9RH8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top
http://www.amazon.com/HELLA-005700901-Series-Halogen-Lamp/dp/B0002M9RUU
The only thing I can see different about them is one is a "driving light" and one is a "fog light." I am looking for something to use pretty regularly in actual on-road situations, so should I go with the 'driving' light?

Honestly I would go with a euro style light. It's sort of a combo of driving and fog. However they are usually more expensive.

If you don't have factory fogs I would probably go with the fog lights. Otherwise go with the driving. And go with the highest watts possible. You want them bright and want it done right the first time.

This might help

Thanks man

Based on that page, it looks like I oughta go with the fogs. I don't necessarily want high beams....I just want my regular low beam lights to be complimented by the new lights so I can see more, and have brighter lights overall.

calvin: the top pic is a driving light, which produces a longer, narrow beam, which is excellent for dark roads with no traffic. The lower pic is a fog beam, which produces a wide "bar shaped" beam of light close towards the front of your truck. Great for everyday driving and foul weather.
Not to brag, but since 1983, i have installed over 100 sets of fog, driving, offroad lights to my past vehicles, all in the search for that "perfect" lighting system! brands like Marchal, Bosch, Hella, Cibie, Blazer, Aris, KC, etc..

the one i have now. I took the bulb shroud out of an old hella 500 fog lamp and Installed it in my hella 500 driving lights. The result is a driving light that has no glare, is legal for use on the road in all traffic, and is 50 state compliant, because the bulb is shrouded, like a headlight. Also, these lights are so good, in bad rain, fog, etc.. the light pierces the elements and lights up the road.

Can you all tell me what driving in Minnesota does to your Ranger? I hear the frame rusts out much quicker. Does it affect the electrical systems?

The frame rusts a lot quicker, but it doesn't "rust out" like you think it would. All it is is just surface rust. The metal running boards seem to crap out pretty quick, and get rusty. Bolts get impossible to remove, unless you heat them or hit them with liquid wrench. And from what I've heard, using an undercoat on your frame is bad. The thing that annoys me the most is how my old rims we pitted out. But the rust isn't very bad if you keep the truck clean...I have a 2001 with 100,XXX miles and I have zero rust on any of the body panels or bubbling up paint. Keeping up on car washes is a must, car washes with an under spray to clean the frame is helpful to get the salt out.

This winter in WI I had my rear shackle bracket completely rust apart to the point that my leaf was resting on the bottom of my box, I have 63000 miles on my 01. But the rims pitting sucks and some reason my back bumper has rust on it.

No, you gave me regular fog lights. which to be honest, didn't work out to my liking. The ones I have are specially made lamps.
