Speaking as someone who works in the ecological restoration/landscape restoration business, I can tell you there IS money to be made in that sector but it is VERY hard to break in to the business as a new company. The primary problem is that the market is just saturated with companies who all do roughly similar things and have solid reputations and track records on top of that. If the bidding process for a project comes down to 3 companies and one is a start up with no jobs under their belt and the other two are established companies and all the bids are about the same....you know where that job is going to go.

Not to pile on about it, but the other problem is that the start up costs are mind-boggling. You don't realize just how much equipment you actually need until you sit down and figure it all out.

The company I work for isn't even particularly large (only about a dozen actual field employees) but we have a fleet of about a 12 trailers, 6 tractors, 8 pickups, 2 vans, a dump truck, a semi, a flatbed freightliner, 2 excavators, 3 skidloaders, a whole yard full of tractor implements and various equipment, 4 atv's, and a warehouse and shop that cost about 1.2 million bucks.

We aren't that big but my boss started his business 5 years and he's got over $300,000 and he's got 2 pickups, 4 dumps, 6 trailers, one excavator and one skid steer but he's doing great and he even has to turn down work cuz he has too much. But trust me I know the start up costs are alot

oh my work truck I bought from an old boss for $700. My ranger I got for $5000. It goes NOWHERE near the construction site. Not since I ran over a nail. Which is still in my tire! My ranger books for $10,000.

I tried flexing that old beast. It groaned and creaked light the titanic when I flexed it. My god that old thang was so stiff!
