    I used semi-gloss rust paint from Canadian Tire (the brand is Armour Coat). I think it was like 12 bucks a can, but lasts for quite awhile. Just brush it on. Mine's been painted since the middle of summer and it hasn't bubbled or flaked or anything, still looks great.
