Gran Degajeur

We bought an 83 Ranger PU, 2x4, 2.0L 4 spd about a year ago. Needed something cheap to teach the kids to drive a stick shift. It needed some work, we did it, it runs okay. Has little power, between age and a 2.0L engine that is understandable. Times are tight, but we'd like to put a V-6 in it, if it is economically feasible. We considered doing a 302, but it is too much money. We have done a number of engine swaps, my sons and I kind of enjoy it. My wife not so much. Looking for advice, don't want to start and find out I can't afford to finish because I didn't know something. Appreciate you all's willingness to share your experience.
