Long Travel Suspension bias.
Okay so I am looking for long travel front suspension kits for Rangers and every site I go to specifies they are for Ranger Edges and 2wd Explorers. Well everything I have found about Ranger history nothing says the front suspension was different between the XL, XLT or Edge. I mean maybe they used different shocks, but not different suspension systems all together, did they? Therefore if it says it's for a Ranger Edge and I have an 04 XLT I can still use the kit on the XLT, right?

Two completely different suspension systems. There are quite a few long travel XLT rangers around so there's probably at least a handful of companies that make long travel kits for the XLT suspension.

Well, that's super cool that they make them for XLT, I couldn't find that last night.
But I still don't know what's different. I mean aside from having different shocks they use the same systems don't they? I can't imagine that Ford would use a completely different suspension system for the Edges vs. the XL and XLT, that seems severely inefficient. Is there anyone that can shed some lite on what is different between the two systems?
And what about the XL and XLT are those two different systems as well?

The front half of the frame is completely different on the XLTs. The 4x4/edge rangers use a torsion bar setup while the XLTs use coils and the coil buckets are built into the frame. Not to mention all the control arms are different as well.

Ah Ha!
Interesting. So they basically just use the 4x4 frame for even the 2wd Edge's.
So XL and XLT frames are the same, more or less and Edge and 4x4 frames are the same, more or less. Would that be an accurate statement? So now I must find an Edge, cause the LT kits are much cheaper for them, haha.

Thats correct. XL/XLT frame is the same and Edge/4x4 is the same.

If you have the truck in your avatar, you have i-beam front suspension which is different that the later a-arm suspension or torsion bar suspension. You have lots more options with the i-beam.

Long travel suspension kit allows the wheels to travel further up and down for better control and comfort over rough terrain. The same reason when you jump off some thing you bend your knees when you land. It spreads the force out and prevents bottoming out.

I know I have an I-beam in my '95. I'm buying a second ranger and I want to make sure I get a truck that will be best for Prerunning. The Edge seems a better option because it's easier to install the front LT suspension kit, and it's cheaper. I just couldn't find anything on the difference between the XLT 2wd suspension and the Edge 2wd Suspension, until now. I really appreciate everyone helping me out!
My plan is to pick up an X-cab Edge, throw some fiberglass bedsides and fenders on it, paint it jalapeno green, throw on a LT suspension and have a lot of fun! Not necessarily in that order.

You will spend alot of money putting one together, have you thought about buying one thats already built, there are many out there and can probably be bought for half of what it takes to build one.

go to dixonbrosracing.com or camburgracing.com for long travel kits for the edge, personally i like the dixon bros kit. also there is a long travel ranger for sale on dixon bros website, its really nice, for i think 11,500. im building my truck with a long travel, after i graduate in about 3 months. Do you know what your doing with your rear suspension?

Lol your better off building up your 95 and dding your new one. You will spend twice as much long traveling your 04 then you will your 95. There is a term used in the offroad world called "dirty hooker travel" and it means that i beam suspensions are so cheap to get travel out of that its like paying a dirty hooker lol. Look at me for example i have dropped maybe a grand and a half into my front end (mind you i built it myself) and i have 20 inches of travel out of the front. So any questions about building a ibeam suspension ask away!
