Questions and concerns about lifting
I have a 4.0 4x2 02. I noticed pretty much all the 4x2s are nearly just as low as a normal car, and no where near as high up as the average full sized truck. I also really like the whole mudder style of trucks. And so I was thinking about lifting it some how and throwing 30-32in tires on it, but I have 2 questions about that.
1. What is the cheapest way to lift a truck. I don't have much tools available, and I'm only 16 and still trying to learn about cars. I was thinking of raising it with airshocks, but I only hear about body lifts really. It sounds too expensive for me to have a shop do a body lift, since i don't think I would have the tools for that at all. Would airshocks do? I know they aren't the strongest, but I live in the middle of a city. I dont have any places to go off roading unfortunatly. I am wanting it lifted one for liking being higher up, and two for looks.
2. I really like my truck and dont want to trade it in for a 4x4, but I am also afraid that people will trash on me for lifting a 4x2, since I am planning on bringing it to car shows starting this december. I have a lot of plans for it. But lifting a 4x2, is that really THAT big of a deal? Or is that something I will regret bringing to shows over?

Lol....
Shocks do not control ride height. You can do your torsion bars. Not sure on those but someone will shine some light in that area. This is what I have learned so far.
Suspension lift. Since you want to put 30-32s under it you will need a 3-4inch lift to sit comfortable. That's is going to be anywhere between $800-$1500 maybe more.
Body lift. You can do a 3 inch body and possibly be good with 31s. Anything larger will scrub. Cost somewhere in the $200-$400 ranger. (Pooleo lol)
Suspension;
Pros: better look and performance
Cons: expensive
Body lift;
Pros; cheap and gives you a lift
Cons; can see the frame and underside and very common
Also you will need new shocks with any lift to make up the difference in length. Wrong length and you will destroy your shocks.
Recomended shocks are;
Rancho
Blistein
skyjacker
Pro comps

Re: Questions and concerns about lifting
Really? My dad used air shocks to lift his back end on his 73 mustang 3 inches so I assumed you could use it as a lift. I dont know much about this field though so I might sound like a complete idiot right now though. But thank you anyway.

Re: Questions and concerns about lifting
Maybe it was something like airbag helpers that would fill up with air to raise it.
As far as lifting a 2WD truck... Nothing wrong with that.
Check out this 75 page build thread on a 2WD truck thru many different stages of "lift" and much more mods.

Re: Questions and concerns about lifting
I may be wrong, but u said "Also you will need new shocks with any lift to make up the difference in length. Wrong length and you will destroy your shocks."
That's not true with a body lift.
Like I said, I may be wrong, but with my 4wd truck, lifting the body had nothing had to do with shocks. It may be different on 2wds tho.
And dude as far as tools to do a body lift, all u really need is wrenches, sockets, ratchet, maybe an impact wrench, a propane torch, and some muscle and sweat.
Can be done over a weekend with basic tools and supplies.
And for lifting a 2wd truck, its your truck, do what u want. There are guys on here who have 2wd trucks that are lifted and have big tires, and when they are next to a 4wd, u can't tell them apart.
