front suspension conv.
curious if anyone knows if there is an axle housing that will match up for an easy swap changing from the independent suspension on a 2005 Ranger edge to a solid axle with coil spring.

yeah, a waggy d44(certain years), EB d44, late 70's f150 d44, even a jeep d30 fits... you can make most anything fit. how good are you at fabbing? how much money you looking to spend? that'll help narrow it down fast!

willin to spend the money to get it done correctly. not bad at the fabbing part and what i dont know i have people who do. i just started lookin at lifts and for what i want i figured it would cost as much or less to convert it and get more lift than what i would ever be able to get out of that independent suspension and have a better ride quality
just needed a point in the right direction for it. have you converted one yourself?

i was gunna do a SAS, but then i got some quotes of how much it would cost to swap....3-5 grand. have fun!

You can do it for much less than that.

A solid axle wont provide you with improved ride quality. Thats half the reason you dont see them under pickups any more. The IFS is made for ride quality, but lacks ground clearance, wheel travel, and durability. Solid axles will hold up to a beating and will flex very well, but they wont handle or ride like IFS on pavement.

x2 on IFS, it does ride better, but it cannot take the beating that a straigh axle can take.
and i've heard of guys doing a SAS on rangers for 1,000... so 3-5K is like getting an axle already built, buying a "SAS kit" and bunch of other B.S. items.
i haven't done one yet. the only reason is because i don't have the time or resources to do one. i'm in college still, can't give my truck up for a week or more to do it. however i can help point you in the right direction... here's some VERY helpful websites, and all i have to say is research till your eyes fall out of your head and then just do it. but the more research you do the easier it'll be in the long run...

this will help with some ideas to do the SAS with... d44 are the most common because of the strength and still relatively small size of em(i.e. you can still clear the pumpkin with 33's and 35's)

Guess what.....
SASing 98+'s are no walk in the park, and not practically bolt on like on 97 and older trucks.
There's only a handful of SAS'd 98+ trucks out there. When I worked out prices for mine, doing it right the first time, the cost was approx 6k in just parts. Of course I was going to go coil-over with dual coils on each, 3link front, D44 front all gone through(unless I found a 60 for a decent price), rear 14B all gone through, both geared and selectable locker'd.
With that being said, here's what almost 10k in parts looks like installed on my buddy's 07....(d44 and 9", 40's, 17" beadlocks, 5.13's, lock'd, etc...). Mine was going to be very similar, but definately not as big. Mine was going to be built for 37's, probably running 35's. Keep that CG down.

Billy needs to drop his 98's back end to 7" instead of it's current 5", then he'll fit. We measured. lol.
Truck has settled some since the pic...but not much. It's pretty damn large...way too large if you ask me. It's built for sand and snow now....no trails. Way too top heavy.

I did mine for under $3k. The thing is though, I bought the axle already geard to what I needed, and it came with eveything....coils, control arms, front d-shaft, coil/shock hoops. I bought the setup for $2k, then put another $1k into stuff I still needed.....steering box, power steering fittings, couple of brackets from ballistic fab, steering shaft parts.....probably missing something.
The ride isn't bad, but its not great either and the steering leaves something to be desired. I didn't do this swap for on-road manners though. Its a lot of work, and tons of research.....not something you should dive into until you FULLY understand every aspect of what needs to be done.

i didn't realize how much tougher the 98+ rangers were to SAS cause i've got a 93 and don't care for the IFS on any truck. but those are some nice looking trucks! Razoredge, it says you've got a d30 under there? how's that holding up? i heard that ain't a very good axle for the ranger since the ranger is so much heavier than a cherokee or wrangler. i take it you're running XJ coils or something?

Well, my ranger isn't as heavy as some since its a regular cab 3.0L. The axle is fine so far but I haven't had a chance to really test it yet. It should be fine though. I'm light footed offroad, I'm not one of those balls-to-the-wall type of people that'll break a d44 with 33s haha.
I'm running 5.5" Rubicon Express coils for an XJ.
