That's what I meant. Ok, well I need to figure out how to pull it off the upper shaft (I tried getting in between the upper and lower--where the shaft connects at the firewall--with a couple different tools and some light tapping with a rubber mallet but it didn't budge).

You are supposed to separate it before you jack it up so if you lifted it then did that it will give you a bunch of problems. It's not long enough. If not It should slide right out.

----------

Also to answer your question about you e brake you have to remove it to relieve pressure when you lift it. Pull the break line out, then clamp it with vice grips. It will make it easier to work with. Then compress the clips and slide it out. (Below drivers door). Keep the vice grips on until after the line is back in place.

Ok thanks. I thought maybe lifting it would pull the steering shaft off but it did not. I didn't lift it up much before I stopped either.

It's only about an inch at most short so you shout be ok. I'd say douse it in WD-40 if you haven't already. Then try the mallet again the next day. Mine came right off so I'm not sure why yours is hung up.

I have doused it in PB Blaster, more last night than ever. I'll be trying it again after work today..... I know most people's slid right off but I did see at least one person say theirs was stuck (after Googling, another Mazda on another forum--the thread was 1 post long and from 2011 though so no help there).

Heat it up. If you can heat the outer sleeve while contracting the inner one that would be another good option. So maybe hit the sleeve with a heat gun then at the same time ice the other shaft then pound away

I was thinking about that but had fresh penetrating oil in there and I only have a torch to heat it.

Blow dryer? Or you could freeze the other half with a fire extinguisher

A blow dryer would be safe enough but would it get it warm enough is the question...., I'll have to try it.

I basically said f**k it and (carefully) stuck my torch down there. All in all, I'm still having trouble with it and it's still stuck on there...
