Moog 10809 x2 ~$50 @ Amazon (flaps wanted $39 per)
Ford spring insulators ~$30 @ Ford

So right about $200. Not bad. Haven't had to buy any tools yet, but I called the dude just up the road about a front end alignment and he wants $90. I'll have to call around a bit, I think that is a bit steep and I have to have my wife's car done as well. This was supposed to be cheap and easy.
$90 is very fair for a decent alignment

Haven't done shit aside from landing this axle in the back of the truck. Since photo bucket is the suck and the gearing charts are gone, can someone tell me what I have here? Or direct me somewhere I can figure it on my own? I am of the impression this is from a 2004, 7.5 4.10 ranger. Thanks.

Axle was a parts trade so not really out if it's a bust.

Dude I got it from said it came from either a '02 or '04 rural county truck. I don't remember. Guy got the truck from the county for its frame to build an off road 'mud race truck' and was parting the rest, came to him sans engine and trans so I dunno about that, but knowing government it was probably a 4 banger auto.

Just curious as to what specifically I am looking at.

Okay I'm about to lose a front tire (dry rot, separation, threads showing) so I ordered some 31x10.5 15s up at Sam's club, should be in today.

Got to fix the sag before they will mount the tires. Here goes..

Knocked it out. First side took some figuring out but once I got the hang of it it went quick. Maybe 3 hrs total, including going to get another 4 way after I broke one (pass side wheel was on way too tight).

No more sag. Headed up to Sam's in a bit to get tires installed and aligned. For the record, I ended up with some positive camber but truck is still drivable.

So as a step by step, here's what I did:

Break loose wheel, jack up truck, place on jackstand, remove wheel

Take off lower shock bolt and top sway bar bolt, may have to jack up the arm to get it all loose

Remove lower retainer bolt, I used a 3/4" drive ratchet, 2 extensions, a u joint and a 1 3/16" socket. I was able to drop down through the engine compartment next to the master cylinder on the driver's side to access the nut, the passenger side I just went through the top of the spring. Good twist and off they come, arm falls down, knock spring with large rubber mallet if it sticks, spring falls off.

Put in new spring. Do it all again in reverse order. One side I had to open up of the 'fingers' that holds the spring on top, as the new spring was slightly thicker. Easy knock with the big hammer fixed that. Got new spring seats and nuts at Ford dealership, maybe $35 total.

Doing it again I would say it may take an hour and a half, assuming none of your tools break or mysteriously vanish, and barring weird rust or nut seizure issues.

Anyone need a set of splash springs? I marked them so you can put the saggy one on the pass side and it should even out.

Nice install. Took way longer when I did it. Also I am in the NE though. Everything is rusted to hell. Do yourself a favor before you get it aligned:

Get new alignment bushings, do your tie rod ends and ball joints. Those springs wore out my ball joints and tie rod ends within less than 2 years. So put new junk in before you get it aligned.

That said I was on 235/75/15's and my truck came with 225/70/14's. Currently on 31x10.5x15's and I get to do the front end again.

But nice install!

Thanks, didn't think about the wear parts. Truck is at the alignment shop now. Had to get it back on the road asap as it is my daily/work truck. If there are problems currently they will let me know. If something happens down the road I'll deal with it then. Thanks for the heads up.

Here are the new nexen Rodian at 31x10.5x15s. Minimal drop in torque over the 235/75s, don't know if it warrants the 4.10 axle. We shall see. Pretty substantial over the stock 26s. Overall I think I gained about 4". Stepping out of it for the first time got me.

The tire guy was adamant they wouldn't fit and said I would need spacers, had to sign a waiver, but after it was done he had a big smile on his face, said 'that's a good looking truck.'

Splash on 31s yo!

Before: stock suspension on 235/75:

Align was buck twenty five, said something about caster, didn't use the moog camber/caster wheels.

So far, results have been overall positive. Took some railroad tracks at speed and it felt great, not too stiff and no rubbing. Only negative is the gearing. It still has getup but it feels like I'm pulling a trailer. Lugs pretty hard unless I keep the revs up. Havent had it on the highway but OD was a joke with the 235/75s, now i imagine it is useless. Think I may do the 4.10 and see what that does.

So just for those considering:

Rough Country Levellers $120ish from eBay
Moog camber caster adjusters (did not use) $35 from amazon
Spring retainer nuts and seats, roughly $35 from ford dealership parts dept
Tires $600 out the door mounted and balanced with warranty
Align $125

So just over $900

Spring retainer nut is only 90 ft/lbs (+rust and corrosion) so a 1/2" drive should break it and would be easier than managing 3/4" drive stuff. I am not at all a big dude and had no trouble doing this with hand tools in the driveway. I have an 80 gallon compressor with impacts and torches and all that jive in the garage. Not necessary.

Found a gear ratio calculator, says the 3.73 with 31s runs 3.07 to 1. Recommends 4.54 as ideal so I'll throw in the 4.10. Goes hard in 1 and 2, 4th barely holds 60 (no telling what actual speed is), have to drop to 3rd from 40-60.

Get a gps speedo app for your phone. I just went to 31's with my 4.0 and a 3.55 I'm off by roughly 10% on the speedo. For sure seeing power loss over the 235/75/15. I kinda miss the 225/70/14's. Truck moved pretty good.

Push rod or ohc 4L? Automatic or manual? What was the original tire size?
I had a '98 expo with the sohc 4L and that truck had some get up and could pull... My setup will still burn the tires from startup but gearing is way wonky. Sounds like it's bogging.
