The 2wd spring retaining bolts, yes. Camber bolts I do not know. I thought about cutting the springs but thought someone may want some splash springs, swap sides, it is only about 3/4" sag on the drivers side, should even out. If they are just junk I'll torch them off and give them to my scrap guy.

I'm using a 1 3/16", 3/4" drive socket. My impact gun is 1/2". I know the hardware is metric, know what size?

Nope. And I did use the same bolts. But you will need camber bushings.

They fit into the knuckle above the upper ball joint. I believe the one you need is K80109

Thanks for the info.

Back to spring removal. I apologize in advance if this has been covered but I cannot get the search feature to work.

So DR suggests cutting the springs and hammering the nut off with an impact. Leary in case something goes awry (say I cant get the nut off) rendering my truck undriveable. Definitely an effective but 'all in' move.

Chilton says take off the nut, pop the spring over the stud and rotate it out of the upper retainer. Sounds easy, not so much.

Ford parts guy said compress the spring, and hammer the nut off with an impact. From looking at my truck, the upper retainer does seem to clutch the spring in such a way that it must be rotated in order to release, as mentioned by Chilton.

General interweb searching also suggests compressing the spring, dropping the stabilizer bar and popping the tie rod ends. Again, do the upper retainers clutch the spring enough to keep it from dropping, were I to raise the vehicle and compress the spring?

I know many of you have done this, how did you do it? Or have link if there is a tutorial somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

So I only have a minute. I may need to revisit this to make it clearer.

What I did was I allowed the suspension to sag by jacking up the frame and putting stands under that. Then, I disconnected the TRE and sway bar. I cut the spring at this point and put the impact to it... on the second side.

After I suffered through the other. What I did was put about 4 extensions on a socket and power the bolt off. If you drop the socket in from the top of the spring bracket with a mountain of extensions on it you can get a socket on it. I had to feed in a few of the extensions and line them up in there, which made the decision to cut the other spring a lot easier.

Good luck. Don't waste time with the spring compressors. When you put the new springs on have someone step on the hub to force the axle down and fish the spring in there.

Edit 1: I did initially rent a spring compressor. I started to compress the spring as was like screw this. most of the autozone/ rent-a-tool places will hand you something that can handle the thickness of a strut spring, not a full blown coil. The diameter of the spring is much thicker.

Awesome, thanks. Insulators,/isolators were supposed to be in today from ford but havent heard so probably tomorrow. Moog k80109 should be here tomorrow.

Looked into the 1" bodylift but can't find anything. Any venders still sell these for a '96?

No. I looked and bought mine from a member here. One option you have is buying 3 inch pucks and cutting them down to one

Got my camber/caster adjusters and insulators today.

Once the new spring is in place, how do we crank down the retainer nut? Should I put locktite or something on it?

I just used the mess of extensions I used to take out the old one on one side. On is much easier than off. And I used a pipe over the socket as an extension to get some more push.

Cool, I'll have to buy a socket or a reducer (my big stuff is 3/4" drive) and borrow my Buddy's impact gun as mine is somewhat lacking in the area of balls.

Spent so far:

Rough country levelers ~ $120 @ eBay
Moog 10809 x2 ~$50 @ Amazon (flaps wanted $39 per)
Ford spring insulators ~$30 @ Ford

So right about $200. Not bad. Haven't had to buy any tools yet, but I called the dude just up the road about a front end alignment and he wants $90. I'll have to call around a bit, I think that is a bit steep and I have to have my wife's car done as well. This was supposed to be cheap and easy.
