When I started driving, it was $.84. All I needed was to be a bus boy on fish fridays to keep the tank filled. Not anymore...

U do realize what the double edged sword is?

Put it this way.
Gas prices go up, we demand the auto manufactures to make autos that get higher mpgs.
Once they deliver those vehicles that get double the miles per gallon as our current vehicles, the price of gas also goes up more.

Do the math:
A vehicle that gets 16mpg when gas is like $2 a gallon.
Now newer vehicle that gets 38mpg and gas is almost $4 a gallon.

Isn't that kind of weird?

Not really, its just logical.
Those greedy oil companies aren't going to just sit back and watch their profits fall because people are getting vehicles that are getting double the mileage. No they are going to jack up the price so they can continue to bring in millions and trillions in record profit.

Everytime I see the price go up, I just think, hmm some oil tycoon must need a brand new million dollar yacht. Lol.

So of course if u go out and buy a newer vehicle that gets high mpgs, your now stuck with an auto payment, high insurance, and then u realize that gas is still going to jump up.
And maybe at least your old gas guzzler was paid for, all yours, and insurance was cheaper.

It is currently $3.59 here where I live in Minnesota.
The cheapest I can remember gas was like $0.75 and I remember when it hit the .80s and even .90s my parents would flip out lol.

Thank god I have my motorcycle that gets about 50mpgs that I can ride in the summer. Lol

gc I have to disagree with you to a point. It's not just the "greedy" oil companies. Included in the price of gas is taxes, state and federal. Also those oil companies that employee people have to turn a profit in order to stay in business. We villianize these corporate executive making millions of dollars yet if you think about it. Who employees people? Its not the average person or the homeless guy living on the street, its the big businesses. Not to mention the U.S. charges a 35% tax to business that do commerce here and China and other countries charge 2%. Then we wonder why all of our jobs get out sourced to other countries.

As far as gas prices every President since, I think it was Ford or Kennedy has made a speech about reducing our dependency on foriegn oil and no President yet, regardless of party), has done it. Basically what it comes down to is, IMO, that the government wants to force us to find alternative energy sources. Instead of beating us down with high gas prices they should be encouraging entraprenuers to find that next energy source and market it.

Yes but when the oil companies make trillions of dollars in profits, now profits take place after u have already paid the employees you talk about.

As far as the government wanting us to find alternative fuels and energy, that's bull. We have had the technology for such for over 20 years. Carburetors that burn off vegetable oil and other fluids. Even a rumor of one that runs off water, but all those who invent such an item kinda disappear.

And about state and federal taxes on gas, yeah well do know the government has been giving oil companies millions in subsidiaries and etc, that is where most of those taxes go.

Its been well believed that the auto industry is in league with the oil companies, etc.
When GM was given the bailout, the government issued a contract that said vehicles would need to get a minimum mpg of like 26mpgs.
Then GM responded with a letter saying they would meet that demand, and said any vehicle within the last ten years could also be made to meet that demand.
That clearly states that our vehicles that are getting barely 16-20 mpgs could be brought in and easily tuned/set to get better mpg to meet that demand.

And don't get me started on the electric car, which the technology has been around for more than 25 yrs but has just now barely surfaced.

When BP had that huge oil spill a while back, they were fined millions of dollars for cleanup, they paid that with chump change it was petty cash to them.

The process if making gas from oil hasn't really changed much in the last 40yrs, but they jack up the price.
Diesel is a byproduct and actually is cheaper to make from oil than gas is, but diesel is so much more expensive, that makes no sense.
Diesel use to be way cheaper than gas, not anymore.

Oil is used in many products, from plastics to tires. So when the price of oil goes up, so does everything else. Even food prices go up.
This country and the world is so dependent on oil, the oil companies are rolling in money, don't dare try to defend them or the politicians who back them.

Yes there are alot of jobs on the line, and it would suck to put so many out of work.
But if such jobs have such a big impact on the world and environment, and we wish to change, then things must be cut, jobs will be lost.
Consider the drug industry, all the drug dealers that make money, all the police and authority figures who earn a living dealing with it.
If we found a way to get rid of drugs, a ton of people would lose jobs and incomes and would have to find other jobs. Such is the world. All those in the oil industry would be no different.
A drug dealer selling drugs to pay rent and put food on the table, and an oil worker servicing the oil industry who is ruining the environment to put food on the table.
You can say the two are totally different, but they are both working to the same end.

So what i am saying is all those oil employees are just as much part of a problem as drug dealers. They have to decide, do they want to keep being part of the problem, even if it puts food on the table. Or take a risk and quit and make a change.

Everybody thinks we can just slowly ease off of oil, step by step.
Maybe we should just rip the band-aid off fast and get it over with.

So you are saying that people should just quit their job and stop using oil. Like you said, oil is used in a wide variety of products, so good luck with that. If you want to start the "no oil revolution" then by all means get after it.

But me, I will work.

What I am saying is if u have an infected limb, like gangrene, that is going to slowly kill you, u need to amputate the limb.

Times will be hard, economy will crash, etc, but it's like formatting a hard drive and starting over, lol.

It would be an apocalyptic change, like going back to stone age, lol.

Go back to riding horses, lol.
Growing trees and burning wood to heat our homes and pipes instead of oil and coal.

Yes the reality is such a drastic change, going cold turkey, would almost be the end of the world. Farming and food industries could never keep up to feed the US let alone the world, with over 7 billion people!

As for starting the no oil revolution, I think alot of groups already have done it; the Amish use very little oil, there are still Indian and native tribes in Africa, new guinea, and all over that are still very primitive, not using oil etc..

but they are primitive. No chance the masses could or would live like that. There are just too many people. Like you said, farmers couldn't keep up with a mule and plow.

There is shit on both ends of the stick. No matter which side you are on it stinks.

Yep that's why it's a double edged sword lol.

What I don't get is how and why these crooked politicians keep getting elected.

Our options for president:
Obama
Romney
Santorum
.....
Lol and a few others, all people I wouldn't trust with a lemonade stand, lol

Politics, poly meaning many, tics meaning blood sucking creatures.

I wish I had a penny for every gallon of gasoline that I pumped @ 39 per gallon...

My first brand-new car cost me $4,000... a Ford LTD Brougham...

And my first house (also brand-new) cost about ⅔ of what my last new car cost.

Lowest I've paid was around $1.39. Filled up today with regular for $4.19. Can't even drive my "gas saver" mustang because I put premium in it which is hovering around $4.49+.

When I started driving in 1973 gasoline was $.36 a gallon. I was only making $1.25 an hour though.

The good 'ol days were in the mid to late 90's when gas consistantly cost between $.99 and $1.09.
Could fill up my '96 Ranger for under $15.00.

The average price of a gallon of regular leaded, (unleaded cost more) in 1977 when I got my driver's license was $.66.
The equivalent of $2.48 today.
I was making about $2.00 an hour pumping gas at a Standard Oil station at the time.
