Default Dial Up

Does anyone else besides me have it? IT BLOWS. I live out in the middle of no where and its all I can get. And my parents won't pay for satellite. And yes, I put this in the laugh factory so everyone can laugh at me lol

wow...

That made TIME magazines top 10 things that are almost completely obsolete for the year 2010.

I think you can even get some DSL through a satellite nowadays.

Verizon DSL goes through phone lines and they say we don't have the "fiberoptic" lines running to our house...one mile down the road, they get DSL. It blows.

How does he plan on accomplishing that? Are they planning to just give tax dollars to the local phone company to install it?

Well aparently he is doing it as a education tool for schools. the school in those towns will be the HUB or something for the community. I dont know much about it other than people pissed off about it.

I think tax dollars are involved some how this was also a few days later after cutting special needs programs from schools to balance the budget.

Stuff like this is why I have a bipartisan dislike of politicians.

Sounds like they are going to install a remote terminal at the school. This can then serve the school and the surrounding neighborhood. Basically they take a DSLAM from normally found in the CO, put it in a box somewhere out in a remote neighborhood (or a school basement), and run fiber back to the CO. This is commonplace however it is expensive for the phone company to intstall. They have to run fiber from the CO to the remote location. They do it to expand DSL service into a neighborhood previous out of range with the understanding that people will pay for the service and recoop the installation cost.

Sounds like some slick wheeling and dealing here. Your taxes subsidise the installation of the fiber, dslam, and associated work. Then your tax dollars pay a monthly rate to use it at the school. And then your personal dollars pay to have the connection at your home too. All profit at no cost to the phone company. Someone won big on this one!
