Default New from Texas!!

I just found your Forum, looking for info on towing (found it- THANKS! Search is your friend!)

I have had my Ranger since last July and LOVE it! It's a 2002 with 155000+ miles on it. I'd post a pic, but don't know how on here.

I am 50 years old, raise Miniature Horses and wanted a little truck to pull my little trailer! So far I haven't had to, I've been able to use my friend's much larger truck but would like to start using mine. I do have a tow hitch reciever but need to work on the wiring first (truck has a 4-plug, trailer has a five, and I haven't been able to find an adapter anywhere!)

Hopefully I won't bother y'all with TOO many questions, thanks for letting an ol' lady join you!

Welcome!

Isn't the fifth wire for the trailer brakes?

Yes, I believe the 5th wire is brakes.

Looking at that diagram, I think my trailer is wired differently. I had to rewire it when a friend borrowed it, didn't make sure it was plugged in right, and then the plug came out and was run over somewhere between Fort Worth and home....and lost forever. When I matched up the colors on the trailer to the wiring diagram on the new plug, things didn't quite work out right, but I figured it out! Now everything works fine on the dually and GMC that my friends' use.

From my understanding.

If you have hydraulic brakes on the trailer you need the 5th wire to be tied to the backup lights for it to disengage the brakes when you back up the truck & trailer.

Edit - Found more stuff

5-Way Connectors
5-Way connectors are available allowing the basic hookup of the three lighting functions (running, turn, and brake) and besides the ground, one pin is available to provide support for another function. Typically the 5-Way Flat is used for trailers with surge brakes or hydraulic brakes. The additional wire is tapped into the backup lights to disengage the hydraulic trailer coupler (actuator) when the vehicle is reversing, thus turning off the trailer's brakes.

I believe they are electric brakes.

Welcome...from Minnesota!
Im originally from Texarkana, Texas...not sure how far you are from there.

Most trailer wiring is 4:
Ground
Left blinker
Right blinker
Brake light

Im not sure about trailers equiped with brakes.

Some trailers may be wired with a separate runnining light..?

I have a motorcycle trailer thats equiped with 5 lights...left blinker, right blinker, brake light, running light and ground.
Most trailers will use the brake lights as blinkers..but for connecting it to my motorcyle i cant do that..my blinkers are separate from the brake and running lights.

Up here in MN we have a place called mills fleet farm that carries farm and auto stuff and i know they have 5 to 4 adapters..
