You may want to fab up a protective box to block off the intake air filter from engine heat which seems to be the central consensus on how to make them work correctly. You might make a snorkel set up if you are making a wheeling rig, that way you can run a filter that's up high away from water and will pull cold air. They make kits for this but I don't know if they are specific to a Ranger. Don't cut your catalytic converter off, it's illegal for one, and for two there are plenty of high flows on the market if you really need to replace them. You can get sensors to act like them if you need to but if something is actually wrong you won't know it by you CEL (check engine light). You aren't gaining anything by cutting them off. Off road lights are a must, winch is handy, do a front receiver hitch and a rear so you can move the winch to the front or back. Get a good tool box and make sure it's secure in your bed, in case you roll over. Bolt it down. Rocker guards are good too. Solid axle in the front is way better than a ttb (twin traction beam) setup like I have. You may also want to get a mount for the bed for your spare tire. I'd put a cage in to but that's kind of expensive. I want one in my Ranger but I drive it everyday. So for the moment I'm still planning that. Upgrade your stereo if it hasn't been done already. Love my ipod attachment since I have one. These are just my ideas. Also body lifts allow you more clearance without sacrificing anything. Just don't go with a HUGE body lift. Keep it to about 3 inches. Otherwise you can expose things under the truck you don't want to get wet or dirty. Suspension depends on your axle that you get for the front.

What exactly are the rocker panels, I've heard some about them but don't quite know what they are/
What do you mean by a protective box for the intake? Something like what a stock air filter is in? Or would a snorkel take car of that?
I planned on getting a 3 MAYBE 4 in lift kit, What would be a good size tire? 33's?

Annnnd.

If I got a lift kit, snorkel and tires before the 4wd conversion, would it still be alright for minor mudding/trailing?

To answer your last question yes. It would be fine for some minor mudding and trailering. They do make boxes that go between the rails. Whatever box you get just make sure you bolt it down. By protective box I should say something more like a block off plate. Look at some pics online of k&n filters. A lot of em come with an L shaped box that is what I'm talking about. A snorkel can eliminate it if you make the snorkel run directly to your intake ont he engine and not to where your airbox is. If you route it to your airbox you need to make sure it is airtight or you will suck water when you get it in deep water. Rocker panels, the easiest way to put it is the bottom of the cab where it curves down to the frame. When you open your door and there's a little sill there, that is the start of your rocker. You want to protect them so they don't get damaged and you could have trouble opening your door or f up your whole cab.

I know a ton about diesel, and automotive, but some of those guys easily put me to shame on Rangers and four wheeling. The last 4wd I built was an 87 k5. That's a lot different than what you have. I don't know of a 4.0 diesel. You can do a 4bt 3.9 liter inline 4 cummins. The engines a pretty penny. All new wiring, adapter plates. Your going to run at least 4 gs probably and that's doing it yourself. That's ballpark. I couldn't tell you an exact figure.
