Default Syncro is going out on manual transmission

I was wondering if anyone knew a general estimate on how much it would cost to have the tranny in my 5 speed rebuilt? The gears are loud, and 4th gear likes to pop out. Also, how easy is that to fix on your own?

I thought the same on my manual tranny with 185+k on it. It was fighting me with all the gears, and I would really have to shift at the exact rpms for it to go into gear. Similar to clutchless shifting, like on a big rig, but of course I used the clutch. Not only that it would be really tough to get into first gear from a dead stop, or into reserve, having to force it in hoping I'm not gonna bend the shift forks. And with the tranny having 185k I just thought that it was pretty much at the end of its life (maybe had a rough life with previous owners who had no idea how to drive a manual) and needed to get another one. Anyways yesterday I decided to just go ahead and replace the fluid (unknowable if its ever been changed in its life) and picked up some mobile 1 synthetic atf (yes the M50D takes atf fluid). Well after changing the fluid my transmission shifts alot better. However I've only driven it for maybe an hour total, so it could be that the problems I had before may reappear after 1,000 miles.

As for rebuilding, the M50D normally gets quoted for around $800 for a rebuild. And when your doing that you need to replace the clutch & etc.

Another option, is going onto http://car-part.com/ and finding a local parts shop in your area that has an M50D tranny. A grade "A" tranny with around 60k are normally priced between $500-650.

Edit: Just noticed you have a '89 with the 2.9L, I believe you could either have the Mazda M50D tranny or the Mitsubishi 5spd. So your just gonna have to look up the price on that one.

Warning: the Mitsubishi 5spd takes NORMAL gear oil, however the Mazda 5spd takes Automatic Transmission Fluid so find out which one you have before your change the fluid or buy another tranny.

I must not of read your whole post. Yea if its coming out of 4th gear on its own then the syncro is gone & a fluid change aint gonna help that.

However you could just use 1,2,3,5 gear and skip 4th. Really you could drive (at least in the gearing in my ranger) without 3rd gear or without 4th gear. 1st,2nd & 5th are a must with my gearing, and of course would need either 3rd or 4th. I would prefer to lose 4th since I would be able to pick speed up faster. However highway passing would lack. And then you could just replace the fluid to try and keep the other gears from going out.

Thank for that. I did change the transmission fluid several months ago. For the new transmission, is that pretty easy to do on your own?
