Default 2001 ford ranger retrofit parts

Hello everyone. I am new to the ford rangers. I am 47 yrs old and have driven my european cars but lately i bought a range rover but decided also to get a ford ranger simply because it was offered to me. I paid $500 for a 2001 ford ranger 5-speed/2-dr xlt with rear setas. ( no i dont have side drs that open up). well it has 138,000 miles and runs extremely well. I have had the car for 1-week and here are some things that i already replaced for precautionary events since I did not get alot of history on the vehicle and I could start my own history/service notes.

1- oil change... (dropped oil pan too ) and change gasket, filter as well.
2- brand new radiator (flushed all fluid and replaced )
3-brakes and rotors all around (brake line too) and drained brake fluid in system.
4- replaced clutch/fluid
5-replaced broken tail hitch handle/ and drivers window crank knob.
6- replaced water pump/thermostat
7-all hoses to radiator replaced.

So my question is that none of these items replaced were broken. but i did it as a precaution/ and replaced all myself since i prefer it that way. what other things or issues should i be concerned with? and is their a stock 6disk cd changer i can swap out? what years and parts are a swap for my 2001?

note : i am changing the bed and putting a stepside bed on in place of the stock bed. what do you guys think of that?

thks and i look forward to being here.

Yes there is a stock 6 disc you can put in there. But there are probs with them. Best bet would be to go aftermarket HU. Interior has not really changed since 94 so most stuff is interchangeable, as well as Explorers up to 2002 IIRC. Stepside has definite style points to them, I just prefer more space. Any more plans for it?

You can find the 6-disc headunits on eBay, but as RangerJustin said they have a lot of problems. It is extremely important that the headunit is put in shipping mode if you buy it online. If this isn't done, it's pretty much guaranteed to be broken when you get it.

If the truck is a 3.0 V6, I would go ahead and replace the cam synchronizer. Make sure you use a Motorcraft or A1-Cardone (remanufactured Motorcraft) replacement. Do not use a Dorman replacement.

Hey guess what i it just so happens that one of my longtime clients owns a slew of ford junk yards. He told me to show up and take whatever I wanted. I could not belive it. I got a white perfect shape stepside bed, the entire bedliner/tailgate liner/2inch hitch (heavy) newer style 3rd brakelight (all red) spare tire/clamp bumper )because they are smaller on the stepside bed/ All Free WOW..... Im a lucky guy. the bed is getting ready for paint match.

Are you sure about the interior, because I was told that the floors are different so that the seats may be slightly different also at the bottom mounting points. Could you shed some light on this. Thks And yes I do have more plans for it. I am getting ready to install the locking mounts in the bed for my 2-road bikes. thats why i was not concerned with space. Thats what i use the truck for. And now I can pull my wave runners . I am going to be replacing the stock rear window with the rear glass/slide window.

I went ahead and bought a alpine cd/player today and have it installed with a mini 6disk cd player installed in glovebox. its nice.

From Reg Cab to Ext. Cab differ and maybe 2 door ext and 4 door ext might be slightly dif, I am not exactly sure I have never heard they were different though. There are however 2 style of rear seats, one for the 2 door ext. and another for the 4 door ext. cab.

Where are ya located? Maybe I can get some parts from your buddy's JY.

Yea well I will go back next week and just take my seats out their and put a 2005 split/bench seat in mine and see if its a direct bolt on. If so then all is good. There are however 2 style of rear seats, one for the 2 door ext. and another for the 4 door ext. cab. Yea I found that out. I have the 2-dr with rear seats that fold out from the side not the rear.

Where are ya located? West Sacramento.... Maybe I can get some parts from your buddy's JY. Just let me know what you need and I will look locate and tell you its available buddy.

The cam synchronizer takes the place of the distributor on Fords with distributorless (EDIS) ignition. They can fail for a couple reasons. Often times there is a chirping noise, similar to belt noise, that is a dead giveaway that the cam synchronizer is on its way out.

The reason its so important to fix it before it fails completely is because the cam synch also runs the oil pump.

Replacement isn't too big of a deal. A new cam synchronizer is about $140 at a dealer, but they can be found online for less. You must use Motorcraft parts or an A1-Cardone reman though because the Dorman replacements have been failing in as little as 10K miles.

Here are a couple of write-ups on how to replace it:
