Default Long time ranger owner.

Was referred to this site from a post on my car domain page (87 Ranger xlt 5.2 - Oak Harbor, Washington) and wanted to see what it's all about. Anyone needing help with the 5.0 swap, got lots of info that got me through it. The Ford company should have taken a risk in producing the ranger version with the V8. The 2.3 was just giving me too many problems and no performance, not to mention the gas mileage was worse than the 5.0 that i swapped it out for. Works out great when done properly, the only problems i have to worry about is the occasional header bolts coming loose. Will eventually get the 7.5 changed out before the engine torque strips it out first.

Welcome to the forum. What kind of mileage are you getting out of that 5.0 that it's better than the 2.3 ?? ?

Once the initial break in was done and a few timing adjustments, the mileage has been consistently 15 to 17 around town and up to 23 on the highway through the last 8 months. I found that the 5.0 doesn't even use half as much throttle as when accelerating with the 2.3 and the gearing is set up to drive in 5th gear on the t-5 comfortably from 40(1300 rpm) to 70 mph(2000 rpm). When carrying a load of any kind from 200 to 400 lbs, the 2.3 was full throttle just to keep up with tractor trailers going up the pass while being passed. The mileage was dropping to around 14mpg, and around 19 to 20 with no load. It had been overhauled at 100k miles and didn't improve the performance any.

That's surprisingly good gas mileage, better than my 4.0 gets.

Have you ran it on the track at all?

You should post some pics here.

See if this turns out, Took it just after the hood scoop got installed.

Did a burn out this morning and found out both wheels are hooking up, hell of alot of smoke and the rev limiter kicks in at around 6500 rpm...

Shoe horning the engine into place, and showing it installed with ducting attached.
