haha
thanks
well first of all when i start it for the first time of the day and drive about 5 miles, the temp guage gets above normal, and climbs right up to the red. once in a while the check guage light comes on. unless i bury the gas pedal, it doesnt cool off. but when i do, it seems to drop right down to normal operationg temp and stays cool after that. i was thinking about changing my coolant temperature sensor, or maybe my fan clutch but i just dont know. any ideas?

Do you have access to a digital volt/ohm meter? You can us a small piece of wire at your sensor to read voltage. As my temp goes up my voltage drops in the sensor. at -40 the gauge reads 4.65 volts and at 202 where my thermostat opens it reads about 0.59 volts. You should never be above 4.65 because it is also the default for cold or below .5 volts when it's hot. Then you are definately having a problem. It almost sounds like your fan isn't kicking on as well. What are your normal driving conditions temperaturewise, freeway or city, are you speed racer or are you grandpa. The other thing is you might need to drain and flush your coolant system. You may have a sticky thermostat. I do better being there then trying to diagnose over the net lol and here at school I have a bunch of tools that can tell me all the different information too. Does it ever throw a Check engine light code or just the check gauge light?

i drive it slower than a grandpa. and my normal driving situation would be just on streets around town. rarely the freeway. i have considered flushing my cooling system. changing my thermostat was my first guess. but my past experiences with bad thermostats prove that they are either open or closed once they have gone bad. and i dont think my RPM's would help the thermostat to open.

Actually it can, more speed on your engine the more coolant that your water pump is pushing. Have you checked the fluid level? And if you don't know the last time your coolant was changed it may be time. I don't remember Ford's service interval for changing it but I know mine is overdure lol. Thermostat's are cheap to so if I can't figure anything else out that's usually where I start. I just thought of this, what does your belt and your water pump pulley look like? Could the pulley be freezing till the truck gets hot and the metal expands?

the fluid level is fine, i check them all atleast once a week. i just put a new belt and idler pulley on the truck and its runs very quiet. i doubt the pulley is seizing, they all turn just fine. I inspected them while installing my new belt. I will probbably change my thermostat first. and then go from there.

Keep me posted. I'm a lifetime gearhead, I always like to troubleshoot new problems. Even if they frustrate the crap out of me. Like the injection pump i'm working on for a Cummins B series. It was put back together wrong and I have to go through and reindex and shim it so that it runs properly. Wahoo...not lol
