Default Hello! I'm new and have something to hook up

Hi, I'm new here. I belong to a HD forum and really like it, and find it useful as all get-out. Got to thinking about a truck related challenge I'm having and wondered if there was a forum for Rangers. Sure enough! So, here I am with a question. Recently bought my seventh new Ford Ranger (black with a manual shift and four cylinders). I love it, it has power windows, and is easy on gas, and it pulls my Sportster on a small trailer. I usually keep my Rangers for 60,000-100,000 miles and then get a new one. Both of my sons drive Rangers too. I'm 60 years old, retired, and live in Dayton, OH. Like to take drives to Big Bend Texas, Hatteras, NC, and up and down the California coast.

My question: Got a used truck cap and had it painted black. I installed it, and I replaced the window lifts. All is good. I sorta ran out of dough with the purchase of the cap, and paint job, and the lifts. I still have the overhead brake light on the cap to wire up. And, there is a cap dome light too. I thought I might try wiring them myself with a little help (I'm not very knowledgeable about electricity) Both the brake light from the cap, and the dome light have two wires hanging down inside the cap. Where do I find the wires on the truck to wire them to, and what colors are they, etc. Any instructions and/or pictures would be helpful (lots and lots of pictures if you have any). Do I have to take off the tail light lens covers? I'm trying to learn to do some stuff myself.

Thanks for the help!

Thank you! Thank You! Thank you! Thank You!

tap into either the third brake light on the cab, or it would probably be easier to isolate the brake light wires from one of the tail lights. what year is your ranger?

Welcome to FRF!

What year is your truck? We ask that because depending on your year you could have a blinker as well as a brake light on your shell brake light. But it would only blink for one side not the other, if that is a problem.

For the dome. You could just run a wire to the fuse box and ground it on the frame or find a constant elsewhere (nothing near the rear of the truck comes to mind as being a constant).

Default Cap lights hook-up

It is a 2010 Ford Ranger 4 cylinder. I posted this question twice as I was not sure if I posted it correctly the first time. My first post ever. I promise I'll get better at this.

easiest thing to do is wire it into your trailer plug. either hard wire it behind the plug or get the matching plug so you can easily disconnect it. Just my thoughts, Last bed cap I had I had was LED with both turn signals and brake light, plugged into my trailer lights.
