2003 ranger external thermostat housing lesson
I had the plastic thermostat housing on my 2003 ranger xlt 4.0 V6 spring a leak which sprayed water into my K&N filter tube which in turn sent water into my cylinders and blew both of my head gaskets, because as science class teaches you cannot compress water.I took it to a local dealership LiLListon Ford in Vineland ,NJ which I later found to be con artists and they left my truck sit 2 weeks in the lot to purposely make my engine cylinder walls rust out and sell me a new engine which ran $7000 installed.
The moral of the story
1) Change your external thermostat housing before it leaks.Mine did it at 90,000 miles. They are a defective design and should have been recalled.
(2) If you install a K&N filter tube intake make sure water cannot get into it.
(3)NEVER NEVER NEVER DO BUSINESS WITH LILLISTON FORD LOCATED IN VINELAND NJ.
(Dear Lilliston, you see my name and you know who i am, got a problem with my post? Do something
If a similar problem has happened in your Ranger or Explorer I'd love to hear about it.

Re: 2003 ranger external thermostat housing lesson
I too, have hydrolocked a motor in the past, however, it was not from a failed component, rather from 3 feet of standing calm water on the road I was driving down (had a lower sitting CAI in an old car of mine.)
Sorry to hear of your misfortunes, however, if you want a little advice, I'd like to offer it.
If something like this ever happens to you again, remove all of your spark plugs and turn the motor over until it quits spraying water, then do 3-4 oil changes in a row (cranking it over between each one.)
This should remove all of the water and water/oil mix from your motor, or at least enough that it won't sit and rust.

When I got the truck towed home I took all the plugs out and cranked 'er by hand and shot all the water out, then I changed that thermostat housing and tried to start it and compression was bubbling up out of the radiator so I knew the head gaskets were blown at a minimum, I looked at the engine and said, "Less room to work than my old 5.0 mustang." lol And thank you for the welcomes everyone, much appreciated!

Re: 2003 ranger external thermostat housing lesson
The part is available for only $40 on ebay, Why not change it next tune up to be safe? If you look on the internet it is an extremely common part failure.I just hate for anyone have to go through what I went through. not just being inconvenienced but I also had to send 2 car payments for a broke down truck then spend $7000 on a truck I owed $2000 to the bank still for LoL!
