Tune up (plugs, wires, dist. or coils)...if these parts are failing it can cause random check engine lights...the O2 sensors monitor the gases being discharged, if one went bad the check engine light would be consistent

We tried flashing the codes once and then when I got it actually checked with a tester it wasn't the code we thought we got---its tough doing it that way. It should be in your Chiltons how to do the flashing the codes w/ the codes listed--I think the same book covers your year as well as mine? The tester is expensive so some garages don't keep the one for older vehicles, but if you check around to as many dealers and auto repair shops that you can find, you should come across someone that has the one for the older trucks. My brother (garage owner) has one and his friend who owns a garage has one and they both test without charge...so you may find some garage that will test it for you free and then you can bow out of having them do the repairs if its too expensive.

----------

P.S. Auto shops dealing with restoring antiques should have one--I know of a few of these shops in and around my area...

would love to live near Myrtle Beach, but no we're in Connecticut. I found flashing the codes to be hard--2 of us were doing it and couldn't agree on the sequence of numbers flashed and one number off you're way out of the ball park on what's wrong.... If I remember correctly the procedure to do it is in one section and the codes in another in the Chiltons. The codes are listed under enging specs or something like that--been a while since we did that

Hell-o Roc-A-Bac here,
You can purchase Ford Code Reader for years 1981 to 1995 about $40.00 at most auto parts stores.
I too was having a check engine light intermitting, had it checked, mechanic said no codes were registered.
But still the light would come on, so I put some fuel treatment in my fuel and ran a higher grade fuel for a
tanks worth. The light never came back on, but my '94 2.3L XLT started not restarting after running fine, had
it towed home, tried it when it was delivered and unloaded, it cranked this would happen two additional times (less the towing). So I bought the Code Reader and found their are two types of codes the computer holds in memory one activates the light and the other doesn't after it has been committed to memory. One was related to the secondary curcuit of the fuel pump (the fuel relay) the fuel relay was intermitting so I pulled it out and checked for a short, no short sometimes all you need too do with plug in relays is to clean the contact prongs and reinsert as in my case, but that didn't keep me from buying a new spare for the road.
If you should purchase the OBD-1 Code Reader read the Retreving Codes proceadure section all the way through several times to save yourself time. Good Day
