I have my first Ranger and it has an issue.

I just got a 1998 Ranger today. I think it has the 3.0 liter V6 but I can't remember. Anyways, the truck has an automatic transmission and when I get up to 50 the indicator saying the overdrive is turned off comes on and starts flashing. I tried pushing the button to turn the o/d on but the light keeps flashing. What do I do? Some additional info I have is, its a 4x4, and the original engine blew up so the truck got a new engine with 70,000 miles. Any ways to fix my problem?

Welcome! what you are describing is a problem with your transmission! typically when your o/d light flashes, that is what it is indicating. Usually on these ford ranger transmissions the first thing to go is the valve body gaskets. If you are mechanically inclined you could easily perform this task yourself, it just requires removing the tranny pan and filter, and you then have access to your valve body. You can get a set of gaskets from the dealership, i just dont know how much they will charge.

The reason i believe that it is your valve body gasket is because when you get up to 50 mph, 5th gear will typically engage. When a valve body gasket is blown, you will lose Overdrive and 5th gear. When mine went i brought it to a transmission shop, and they wanted $450 to replace that and flush the fluids. i decided to take the project on myself, it was quite simple.

I'm new to this but i have a 03 ford ranger with a 6cyl 4.0 liter engine and the problem I'm. Having is when I start the truck up it idles fine but after 30sec it sounds like it wants to shut off but it doesn't and the rpms raise and drop and also when stoped with my foot on the brake like at a red light the truck starts to jerk I cleaned and got a new idle control valve and it still does it also was told it could be the 02 censors or a vacuum hose leak but I don't want to go out and but parts that won't fix the problem and I. Can't get it. Checked out because the service engine light don't come on any ideas please let me know thanks
