Smile Should I purchase Ranger?

I have been looking at trucks all day today. I hate to admit I did drive a couple of S-10's.

From what I read on KBB and NADA customer reviews the Rangers do better reliability.

I searched and found your site. I thought what better place than to ask those who may be my fellow owners.

The rig is a 1999 Extend Cab 4x2 XLT no power locks/windows and it is 5sp (which I don't prefer but the clutch is new and I know they save on gas).
The engine is the 3.0 V-6. It has 220,000 original miles and the people that I would be purchasing it from bought it from a Ford dealership at 90,000 miles. He said he has had oil changed very regularly.

The work he has done over the years is: new clutch, and brakes last year. 3 years ago alternator and plugs. He said he used it as his daily driver at about 1,000 miles per week. It does not burn oil.

It has a canopy and a spray in bedliner. Steel wheels and a after market cd.

I don't know what the "life expectancy" is on these. Thought you may be able to help me decided if it is worth the $3,000.

Any input is appreciated.

Rangers are great trucks, i personally dont suggest the 3.0L because its undrpowered, go with a 2.3L or a 4.0L but for $3000 itsshould be a good deal but i cant say anything since theirs no pics.

X2 ... You definitely don't want a Ranger with a 3.slow. It might take you longer to find a 4.0, but believe me ... it'll be well worth the wait.

I owned S-10s, still own a full size Chevy and I just bought a '99 Ranger XL, 3.0 V6, auto, a/c, JVC stereo, long bed 160,000 miles and actually REALLY like it!
Drives easy, parks easy and gets about 19mpg. Pretty basic and I paid $1,100. for the truck, front brakes and wheel bearings $160, rack $250, tax and registration $190...
I feel that I did pretty good and like I said, the more I drive it the more I like it. It pulls San Francisco hills and does 80mph, on the freeway easy!

But won't it cost quite a bit more? I am a poor white girl retired.

WOW, you got a good price. I have a neighbor who has the 3.0 and he likes his too. I guess it's an opinion and what you plan to do with it. I won't be doing much hauling of heavy things. I booked the truck and the price he is asking is about $400 under. Thanks for your input.

my 3.0 has given me no problems and cruises along just fine, thanks for the negativity. it's a reliable motor, which is a great thing to have.

You're Welcome
The 3.0 is just fine in a Ford Taurus and maybe even a regular cab Ranger with a 4:10 diff but it has no place in an extended cab Ranger.

No, a 1998-2000 Ranger with a 4.0 OHV engine won't be that much more.
The 2001 + Rangers with the 4.0 SOHC are the high dollar Rangers.
Drive a Ranger with a 4.0, and then you'll like hell from that 3.0 ...

Welcome to the asylum. After more than 10 years on motorcycling forums I staggered into this place recently and it already feels like home!

Much of the 3.0 or 4.0 debate (which is like a yard mole around this place -- pops up any and everywhere) is solved by answering "what do you plan to do with the truck?"

I've owned both engines and yes, the 4.0 is stronger and gets only slightly less miles per gallon. But, if you are looking for a commuter or personal truck and will not be doing regular, heavy hauling or towing on hilly terrain then the 3.0 can serve you well.

The serviceable life of an engine is dependent on a number of variables. Why not browse around to the 3.0 tech section and search and read a bit on how many miles those owners are getting from the engines? That might give you more of a perspective than the 4.0 vs 3.0 rants that seem to wriggle into every "which Ranger" thread.

for your needs the 3.0 will suit you just fine and its also a 5spd which will help a lot...thats not a bad looking truck judging by the pics...sure it would be nice to have the extra torque of the OHV 4.0 but it all comes down to if you really need/want the extra power
