Welcome. You going to buy new or used? What year are you shooting for? 2wd or 4wd? I'd personally stay away from a manual.

Welcome to the site!!

After years of owning one and seeing problems and other peoples problems....here's my suggestion....

'00 4dr xcab 4.0 4x4 auto. or if it's within the budget 04+ 4dr 4.0 4x4 auto. Steer a little clear of 01-02 4.0's, alot of them have timing chain issues(some 03 apply too, 04+ supposedly the problem was fixed). All 01+ have tachs, but most 98-00 4.0's and 4x4's have a tach.

Manual transmissions on these newer rangers(98+) suffer from a ticking time bomb called a slave cylinder. Some have no issues for 150k. Others, have issues every 20k. It's very hit and miss. Myself and whippersnapper happen to be ones who have the curse.

oh...it's also a good idea to figure out if you want to do any mods to the truck. Bigger tires, etc. This would be a good idea to get the 4.10 gear ratios right off the bat instead of the 3.73 ratios. larger numberical number are better for larger tires.
