Default Plug-In Ranger

Hello from the Great Plains on the banks of the Missouri.

I am considering buying a flex-fuel Ford Ranger. I've found a couple here in Omaha, one of them a 4x4 in good condition (by Kelly Blue Books standards). While I don't particularly need a 4x4, the thought did occur to me that it might be adaptable to conversion to a plug-in hybrid.

I am admittedly ignorant when it comes to the mechanics of Ford 4x4s, but I got to wondering if it would be feasible -- and that's why I joined the forum -- to disconnect the rear drive shaft and propel the truck on the front drive alone? If so, then it might be possible to connect something like a Warp PM DC electric motor to the rear differential to drive the truck in electric mode.

I know this sounds preposterous, but if it's feasible, it might justify my going with the 4x4.

Thanks for your consideration and reality checks.

PHEV RANGER

Thanks for the referral to EcoModer, however my question remains: can you disconnect the rear drive shaft and still run the truck using the front wheels?

As far as I know, yes. Not positive, though.

And Ford produced an electric Ranger years ago, so anything is possible.
