Default Intro and a troubleshoot.

I have a 1987 Ford Ranger. It's really rough (bought it for real cheap, it's my DD until I get enough money to buy a 1997-2003 F-150 :3) but I like the fact it's a 2.3l 5 spd. Funny thing about the engine, it's a 1987 Ranger, a 1985 Mustang Engine, with a 1973 Weber/Holley Carb. Don't ask me, lol.

I'm going to combine this thread as both an introduction and a troubleshoot. My ranger has some problems with the brakes (I don't know about the XLT's, this is the base model and has no brake-booster) but the brakes are really hard to push down, way too hard. And the front Brake calipers are leaking from where you would bleed them. So I'm thinking replace the calipers, what do you think? They're pretty rusted up, which is normal I know, but I figure might as well replace them, I don't like messing around with brakes lol. I like Rangers, have been browsing the forums a few days now, and this seems like a very inviting community, and I hope to become active in it.

Just for the record, I thought about buying a 1994 or newer Ranger for a while, but I love that 5.4 Triton. :3

That will happen when you drop a mustang engine in a ranger! haha...

seriously though I would go with just replacing the whole caliper but that can prob get pretty pricey I would imagine

Yeah, I didn't put the engine in there..don't ask me. I bought the truck through another guy, never met the previous owner. The owner took terrible care of it, it's pathetic. And I can't even begin to tell you how many vacuum leaks there were. EGR wasn't even hooked up, carb needed a full rebuild and the guy had the wash the carb 3 times because of all the gunk on the fuel jets. Anyways, I think I'm going to just replace the calipers and bleed all the brakes and see if that fixes it.

Nope :/ it doesn't have powersteering, brake booster, or A/C. It didn't even have heat because of the heater core needing replaced lol, but fixed that.

Why did you even buy this thing??? Not to sound like a dick, but this thing sounds like a heap that belongs at a junkyard. He stripped out all normal and important components. It has no breaks. Doesn't run right. And has a laundry list of problems.

Well, it's not as bad as it seems. The brakes work, just require a lot of pressure. When we bought it (like $300 or $400), we thought all it needed was a tie rod (I don't know how he did it, but he literally busted the ball out of the rod) and a battery. It's a little rough around the edges, and required a lot of time, we don't even have it insured yet, (because you can't take the title to the DMV unless it's ensured in Kentucky, so we decided to get it running first) but it's something that you enjoy to get running again you know. I though about putting new carpet in it and getting the interior back into good shape, fix the rust, but decided it's not worth it.
Another funny thing, (the guy who used to drive it must've been a total idiot) the harness going to the alternator, the part of the cable that goes the regulator was literally just cut off. We found a parts Ranger at a junkyard that we're going to get a harness off though. It's been a lot of work, but it's a good truck from as much as I've worked with it. Should be on the road within the next week or two. Hope to get some pictures up soon.

Funny thing, before my Mom got her job here, she was offered a job in Ashland, so I almost could've lived there. Of course she was offered that job before I was born, but I'm sure we'd still be there if she had taken the job.
