Default HEY! Newbie with NO Ranger...YET!!!

Hey guys, my name's Alan. Obviously I'm new on here, and new on forums altogether. I do not have a Ranger yet, but I'm going to be purchasing one here in a few weeks.
So actually, I'd like to ask y'alls opinions!!

I'm gonna have about 4500 to 6000 dollars, and I am SURE that I want a Ford Ranger, problem is...I don't know what kind.
I know I like the stepside, and I definitely need an ext cab seeing as I'm 6'4".
Also, I'm going to be going to college in Knoxville in August, so MOST of my driving will be highway back and forth from M'boro to Knoxville.
So...what do you suggest? 4cyl, 3.0 V6, or 4.0 V6 ?? Also, what year might be best?

Thanks guys!!

It depends what you are going to use it for. If its mostly for commuting then i would go for the 2.3 4cyl. If you want something with more pep for towing or just personal preference I would go for the 4L SOHC. I would try to stay above 2001 since the ranger was a more modernized after 2001. The 3l is a decent engine its just if your going to go v6 might as well go for the 4L. 3 L doesnt have that much more performance then the 4 cyl. For your budget you should be able to find a decent 2001-2002 truck for that price.

IMO the Edge or the Sport versions are the best rangers so id recommend getting one of those, 4.0 or 3.0 (same mpg but power difference)

id get the 4.0, 03,04,05 Edge with either 4x4 or 4x2

x50000000 but it depends how much driving you will be doing. If it's a lot then I'd say a smaller engine, but it's up to you. I got the 4.0 v6 and have been loving every minute of it.

And welcome to FRF!

Welcome from East Tennessee.

If you do a lot of driving and not a lot of anything else get the 4 cyl, definately recommend the stick shift, allows you to squeeze all the hamster power out of the engine you can. Otherwise don't touch the 3.0. Its a good engine as many here have proven, but for the power of the 4 cyl and the economy of the 4.0 not worth it. Get as new as you can if you are getting the 2.3l, don't play with the 2.5l 4 cyl. There are guys that get 28-32 mpg with the 2.3l. Ext cab is a must, I'm 6 ft 3, and mine works just fine. Corum member mcPink has a steppie that he loves, and he's probably 6 ft 5 and is very comfortable in it. Again, welcome, I'll see you on the road.

I must be the newbie

i am dwarrren with a 92 ford ranger 2.3 ,lifted with 15"
aluminum wheels..it really looks good when it is wet,
but when it dries the clearcoat gets a lot of white areas.
I like it though.

Wow, everyone! Thanks for all the "welcomes" and the advice!
From what I'm reading, I'm thinking about going with the 4.0 v6!

Keep it coming! I love reading comments.
