Default Newbie With a 1997 Ranger 4X4 extended cab

Hi all, I am new to the Ranger forum. Although I've owned many Fords in my day, none that were the ranger size. I just purchased, less than 3 weeks ago, a 1997 ext. cab 4X4 ranger and have fell in love with it. Look forward to your responses on upgrades and maintenance of this vehicle. It surprises me that it rides as stiff as a 3/4 ton and gets about the same mileage. Around 17 mpg. It has the 4.0 V6, I expected better mileage. Is this not consistent with your all mileage?

My mileage is about like yours. I also have a 2003 4.0, some say the 3.0 has just as bad mileage. Welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum, 17MPG for a 4.0 4x4 is fairly common.

Welcome, I get about the same mileage you do. I get 20 doing nothing but highway, 18 with about 70/30 highway/ city mix and 14-15 doing nothing but town short trips.

Hey, thanks for the welcome. I am surprised at the rapid response here. The Toyota forum I belong to is like a week goes by and maybe you will get a response. I guess in the great U.S.A. the Ford prevails!!! I've been a Ford man since birth and had not a whole lotta choice bout it. Grew up with it and drove it and bought it when I was able to drive at 16. that was 20+ years ago. Last 6 or so years I owned a couple of Toyota's, they are what they are made out to be. Lightwieght and very dependable. But not worthy a haul, hardly of any kind. Bearly pull they're own weight. Well I decided to try out my smaller sized fallback (Ford) Ranger. It is much heavier and not sure if it will preform as well in the mud, but on the open road, I believe it can pull some junk. Then I found out its true MPG and thought I went south, should have bought a full size. What is your alls opinion?
