Default New member looking to purchase FR4x4

Greetings. I'm Ken from Omaha. I'm looking at purchasing a Ford Ranger 4x4. I've 3 kids in college 1 in highschool. I want to give one of my cars to a son and decided a used truck would be nice for me and yhe few bad winters in Nebraska. The ranger seems to meet my needs. Just my wife and I to haul bikes, go camping etc.
Came across this at a local dealer.

Despite the low miles the truck is still 11 years old. What should I look for or be concerned about.

I find user forums provide the best source of information. Appreciatte your input.

Ken

Basically, I would look for minor squeeks when you drive it. The age of the truck means it is most likely time to change the Ball joints but that might not be necessay becasue of the low mileage. Maybe get a trusted mechanic to throughly look it over. Rangers can take a beating and keep going so I think you will make a great purchase with this ranger.

Welcome!

If you are just going to be putting around town a bit with it, maybe use it for camping once in a while, etc it might be better to find a slightly newer truck with more miles on it for cheaper. I thinkn $14k is high for that truck as it is a 2001 and has the 3.0 in it. I'd recommend trying to find a 4.0 over the 3.0 as the extra power is well worth it. You should be able to find some 2004+ with say 50k miles for that price and cheaper. I found my 2006 FX4 level 2 with 55k miles for $13,600.

Depending on your budget I would highly suggest looking at the 4.0 engine. The 4.0 engine is much powerful and gets the same MPG, but you pay extra for the engine. With that said, the 3.0 engine is a great, long lasting & reliable engine.

I still think you can find an extended cab for the same price as that reg cab. And in the end, you'll be a lot happier with that little bit of extra space.

That truck is WAY over priced ... If you're going to spend that kind of $, you definitely want to buy an extended cab Ranger with a 4.0 SOHC and try to find a 04 + Ranger too.

Welcome to FRF! I'm also from around the Omaha area.

Looking at the price of that Ranger isn't too bad. I would check under the hood, no matter how much they make vehicles look pretty with getting them detailed inside, out, and under the hood. I would check the oil before and after you test drive it. Look for stains if there was any past leakage from the head gaskets, oil, or any other areas. Just basically do a look through under the hood and listen to it while driving without the radio on. Listen to it shift and so on. Other than that, it seems like a pretty good deal with that low of miles.

Retailers in Omaha are pretty trustworthy, but I have always checked under the hood, and it has saved me time, and money by just popping the hood in the sales lot. Also check the frame and such to see if it was in a previous crash or any damage. Now days things aren't cheap with gas, and the economy.. So I'm careful with spending my money unless I know I can handle whats wrong with the vehicle and fix it without $$$ in labor in a shop to repair it.

Looks good, and basic cab and box. I'd go check it out for a test drive . I have a 99 Ranger myself and I get decent gas mileage with it. Good Luck!

----------

Also I did buy my 99 Ranger for $3,500. It did have 90,000 miles on it when I bought it. But you have to know what you are grabbing and what is wrong with it or what isn't wrong. Might just get a great deal on a perfect almost new truck!

Yeah, you're right that extra room is nice.

Iplan to check this out. Was hoping for something less that 100k but since I'm only looking at 7-10kmiles yr. I thought this looked decent. What you think?
