Default My First Ford Ranger 1998 XLT

I am having a real problem with a 1998 Ranger XLT. I purchased this truck at a Farm auction. I changed several things after bringing it home but still will not idle. What I have done so far is change plugs (misfire on 2&4) no more codes. Changed TPS, ACM, still will not Idle. Will run at 40mph in 3rd gear and falls off to bla in 4th. Come to stpo and dies. Hard to restart. Checked for VAC leaks. none Truck has 145000 mile and is super clean. Can someone tell me where to look now.

as far as the idling problems i would check the IAC. not running right check out the coil packs and then go from there.

Thank you Clinton, I will Buy 2 new coils and replace. I have to go 106 miles round trip to get them. At this milage should I consider changing timing belt along with cam & crank sensors also.

Cool Re: My First Ford Ranger 1998 XLT

I want to thank all of you for you input an suggestions addressing the problems I am having with my RANGER. Although its frutrating at times I am Having fun with it. Being handicap and 64 years old I have replaced almost everthing in the engine compartment except the engine. I am putting in new thermostat today and will button up. If it will idle and run I will start looking at MODS. First will be a visor and cab lights.

I am still working on this Ranger trying to get it to idle and run right but the more I get into it the more I want to do. I am down to the injectors and. Replaceing all of them needed or not. I am going to change all vaccum hoses as I go. The new parts listing that I have put into this Truck I am sure will be worth it in the end. NAPA parts store is just loving my money and the wife says it keeps me out of the house and in the barn which is fine with her. If after all of this and it does not run right a engine swap will be in order. I will gut the truck and drop in a 283/350 trans combo, chop and channel the body and drive to California and back. Have a good day everybody.

I have ordered a lot of parts for my Ranger and I ran into a glitch. I ordered a Cam Position Sensor and Crank Position Sensor. I have since been told that the 2.5 1998 does not have a cam sensor except on Calif models. Can anyone verify. Thanks
