New to Ford, Rangers, This site. Hi
Hi there,
I've always found forums to be the best place to get information on my vehicles. Yesterday I made the jump from my imports to a lifted '91 ford ranger. Looks like a 4" lift with 33" wheels and I'm 5'6"... it's very comical watching me get into and out of this thing.
Some background on me.
- I have an '88 Mazda 323 GT mmm fast.
- I have a '90 Mazda B2200 lowered and stable mmm drift
- Now I have this '91 ford ranger Custom with a v6 4.0 liter
The whole reason I bought the truck is to tow my 16' boat or my buddies 12' boat after I sell mine. I may leave the truck as is and use it for only towing the boat to the lake and back. I might not enjoy towing a boat and may sell the boat and the truck together and call it a fire sale.
I was going to tow the boat with my mazda, but when I went to install my universal classIII hitch, I found out my mazda's frame was removed with a plasma cutter to shave the bumper.
So with a bit of searching on Used websites I found a bad picture of this black truck (picture made the truck look rusty red and was very faded) Luckily no one showed interest because of it and I ended up with it for almost no money. When I had it checked out at the shop I was offered double what I paid there on the spot. Only 1 leak from the oil pan gasket.
This weekend I'm bolting the tow hitch to the truck (no cutting or drilling needed) Then we see about taking the boat to the lake.
Then over the next year I'll fix the truck up a bit.
Background on me...
I'm not a car guy. I'm a wannabe tv car guy. I'm a general reasearch and fix it sort of guy. I have lots of dumb questions and lots of willingness to read. But I have a hard time starting a project unless I have done the research first.
Issues list
1. WHIIIIIIIIIIIINE. When I ask how to fix it I'm told "Buy a GMC" I'm hoping I can rebuild something or replace something to make it go away??? Help?
2. tickticktickytick tick ticky ticky tick tick. yep I think lifters. I'm hoping a can of engine restore makes it go away. If not I'll have to look into this.
Question: can I take the valve cover off, replace the lifters and put the cover back on with a new gasket to fix this? or do I need to pull the head off?
3. The ebreak works, but doesn't hold the truck in some driveways. Even if it's in first gear. The cable itself is easily accessed under the driver side of the truck but hangs down. it has a bit of play when the ebreak peddle is on the floor. It looks like the assembly should be hooked onto the body somehow. is this right? Or is it supposed to hang down? I'm hoping I just need to tighten this, or replace the pads.
4. This comes to another issue, How do you jack up a truck on 33s with a 4" lift? Couple friends and jack stands?
5. I was told when I bought the truck that the hubs weren't working after he came back from a fishing trip. I found a site that shows how to replace/rebuild the hub. Is there something I could check out before buying a new hub? i.e., vacume lines or greese lines?
6. Tail gate won't come down. it looks like the dent in the back makes the driver side not release. I'll either use a screwdriver and hammer to get it down and do some metal work on the dents.
7. I've never driven anything other than my mazda's with 5 gears. What is the (D) gear for on the shifter? Is this my 5th gear? or is this something to do with the 4x4? Any info on how to drive a 4x4 ranger would be helpful at this point since I don't know how haha.
That's me. now it's time to search the site for answers.

Re: New to Ford, Rangers, This site. Hi
Welcome from a Washington native. My parents got married in Victoria, and one of my best friends is in Chermainus (sp?)
Man a lot of questions, hit up the appropriate parts of the site and we will help you out as we can. The D is for overdrive if you have a manual. Hints on driving a 4x4 - drive responsibly, just cuz you can go forward in any terrain does not mean you can stop in any terrain.
The whine could be all kinds of things. Find out where the whine is located and get back to us. As for lifters that can be done how you listed.
Ebrake can be adjusted, but with a vehicle as old as yours, I personally would replace it from cab back, its not stupid expensive and its done and over with then.
Lift your truck with either a body lift or suspension. The body lift is easy but time consuming, and suspension is not as time consuming but is more work.
AS for hubs, they are common to fail, if you have automatic hubs, meaning you don't have the selector on the hub for free or lock mode, replace them with manuals, they are stronger. Best I can tell you to see if they are working, take it in a field, put the truck in 4wd and see what it does when you hammer the gas.

Re: New to Ford, Rangers, This site. Hi
welcome to FRF, Cory!
did you say you have a (D) on your shifter? is your truck a manual transmission?
if "yes" then that (D) is actually an "O" with a D inside it, meaning "Overdive" which you would use on highways, just like a fifth gear.

Re: New to Ford, Rangers, This site. Hi
Thanks for the welcome!
When I said lift the truck I meant' how to get the tire off the ground. I don't think I've seen a big enough jack for that sort of thing
Thanks for the Overdrive info. That's good to know.
Time to read up on the forums Pictures of the truck to come soon.
